Due to the possibility of adverse weather conditions, the start of the Regional Track & Field Championships has been changed to 1:00 p.m.
Dodge City High School will host the 2017 Regional Track & Field Championships on Thursday, May 18, at the Memorial Stadium Track Complex.
The complex includes an 8-lane synthetic surface and 2,500 seats on the east side of the facility for teams and spectators. The finish line is located on the NE section of the track.
DCHS Boy’s Golf
The Dodge City High School golf team competed in the Great Bend Invitational on Tuesday and finished third. Luke Gleason led them in scoring with a 78 which was good enough for an 8th place individual finish. Following Gleason was Dylan Ratts and Adam Keseen who had an 81, Canyon Owens and Matthew Vogel who had an 82 and Ethan Goertzen who shot a 91. They were in action Friday night at a tournament in Garden City.
DCHS Girl’s Swimming
The Lady Demon swim team competed in a meet in Salina on Thursday. The meet had two separate divisions and Dodge City finished third in both scoring 420 points and 419 points respectively. The Lady Demons placed first in six different events across the two divisions. Dodge City will head to Hays next Thursday for the WAC championship meet.
DCHS Baseball
The Red Demons clinched a share of the WAC title Friday night, being Liberal on the road 5-2. With the win, the Dodge City moves to (11-5, 5-3) on the season. They will take on Wichita Heights and Newton on Tuesday.

Dodge City competed in the Garden City Invitational on Thursday and walked away with 12 gold medals. Juan Gomez took first in the 100 and 200 meters, Chidera Okoro took gold in the 100 and 200 meters, the 400 meters, and the long jump. Jason Luft took first in the 800 meters, Marcelo Cruz took gold in the 3200 meters, Savana Wilson took gold in the 100 meter hurdles, Same Unruh finished first in the 300 meter hurdles, Erick Villa won gold in the discus and the boy’s 4×100 meter relay team walked away with gold. Next up for the Red Demons is the WAC tournament at home next week.

The Memorial Stadium complex includes an 8- lane synthetic surface and 2,500 seats on each side of the facility for teams and spectators. The finish line is located on the NE section of the track. Concessions will be located on the EAST side of the Stadium.
In 2016, the Garden City High School Lady Buffaloes won the girl’s title for the sixth time in school history, and for the fifth time in a row. Great Bend has collected six titles, Garden City has six titles, Hays has four titles, and Dodge City has two titles.
On the boy’s side, the title was won by Garden City for the first time in school history. Dodge City has won four titles – including the inaugural meet championship, Great Bend has collected one title, Hays has won eight titles, and Liberal has won 17 titles.
Liberal still holds the record for most championships (13 – Girls / 11 straight); (17 – Boys / 16 straight).

Okoro, Cruz and Servis sign letter of intents during early signing period

Three Dodge City High School student athletes signed letters of intent on Wednesday to join NCAA Div. II universities.
Seniors Marcelo Cruz and Chia Okoro will both continuing running in college. Cruz, who signed with Fort Hays State University, finished 4th individually at the 6A state cross country meet back in October.
Last spring, Cruz finished 8th at the 6A state track and field meet in the 3200 meter run and was part of Dodge City’s 4×800 relay team that placed 4th. “It feels great,” Cruz said. “I’ve been training really hard and everything that I’ve done has come to an end and this is it.”
Okoro was an important member of last season’s Dodge City girls track and field team that placed 5th out of 29 teams at the 6A state meet.As a junior, Okoro medaled in the girls 400 meter dash and the 4x400meterrelay.
She will join the track and field team at Washburn University in Topeka, joining former Red Demon Jasmine Duarte who was also part of the 4×400 meter relay team.
“They have a really good track program,” Okoro said. “It’s brand new and all of the coaches are really good and know what they are doing. I know that I’m going to a good program.”
Dylan Servis signed with Western State Colorado University where he will wrestle. Dodge City head coach Lars Lueders was also a member of the Western State Colorado University wrestling team during his collegiate career.
Servis, who missed his entire junior season due to an injury, will return to the mats this winter for the Red Demons. As a sophomore, Servis placed 3rd at the 6A state tournament. He is also a two-time Fargo All-American.
With his college decision out of the way, Servis says that now he will have one less thing on his mind during wrestling season.
“A lot of people told me that trying to sign during the season or talking to schools in season was really stressful, trying to figure out what to do,” Servis said. “So my goal was to sign before the season started so that I can just enjoy it and be a senior.”

Demon girls fall just short of WAC title; boys squad takes third

It came down to the very end on the girls side between Dodge City and Garden City on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Stadium for the Western Athletic Conference track and field championships. The Buffaloes edged out the Red Demon girls by seven points to claim the conference title. On the boys side, Dodge City took third place with a total score of 81 points.

al event of the day, the Red Demons fell to Garden City in the 4×400 meter relay by less than a second.
Four individuals on the Dodge City girls squad earned WAC titles. On the track, senior Brekk Flax earned gold in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. The senior standout also anchored the 4×100 meter relay team that outran the competition.
“Running in front of the home crowd is probably the greatest thing you could ever do,” Flax said. “It’s our only home meet so that helped a lot.”
Junior Tia Bradshaw added a pair of WAC titles for the Red Demons girls team as she out jumped the competition in both the girls long jump and triple jump events.
For the Dodge City boys, two individuals, as well as the 4×800 meter relay teams were crowned WAC champions on Thursday.
Junior Alex Ultreras finished off the individual events on the track with a bang as he set the Memorial Stadium record in the boys 3200 meter. After sitting in third place going into the final lap Ultreras, along with teammate Marcelo Cruz, raced neck and neck for the final 100 meters.
“The la
st lap, I was just thinking about getting the team some points,” Ultreras said. “Me and Marcelo gave it our best and we came in at one and two. Working as a team, is the best thing you can do and because of that, we won that race.”
Fellow junior Jason Luft, along with Ultreras and Cruz, helped the Dodge City boys to their only first place relay finish in the 4×800 meters. Luft also earned a WAC championship in the boys 800 meter run.
“I feel like we have a good chance to place at state,” Luft said about the 4×800 meter team. “We’ll just see how far we go. Regionals is next week so hopefully we can get a better time.”
The Red Demons will travel to Garden City next Friday for regionals.
