Big Week in Demon Nation!
Unless you have been living in seclusion – or Kansas City – there is a good chance you are aware that the Red Demons are traveling to Riverfront Stadium in Wichita to take on the Garden City Buffaloes on Saturday night in the 85th annual Hatchet Game. And while the game provides DCHS the opportunity to showcase Red Demon Football, The Pride of Southwest Kansas, and its outstanding cheer and dance squads, this week also shines a spotlight on every fall program.
Lady Demon Tennis
Last Friday, at the 6A KSHSAA Regional in Garden City, the Lady Demons finished third overall in the eight team tournament. The team had just wrapped up a busy week in which they finished third as a team at the Western Athletic Conference Meet, held at Preston Courts. Flaminia Lepri, who finished 2nd at WAC, avenged a previous loss earlier in the week to win the Regional singles title in three sets (2-6, 6- 2, 6-3). America Gamez finished in sixth place in singles to qualify for the 6A State Tournament as did the doubles team of Karen Lopez and Emily Estevane. Lopez and Estevane were also WAC runners-up in #2 doubles. All four qualifiers will compete this Friday in Wichita, the second year in a row that the 6A State Meet will be at Wichita Riverside Tennis Complex.
Lady Demon Golf
Ashlyn Armstrong continued her outstanding senior season on Monday finishing as the Regional runner-up shooting an 86 at Southwind Country Club in Garden City. The team also finished second with a 432 qualifying them for the 6A State Tournament next Monday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The top six teams and twelve individuals (not on top six teams) will qualify for Day two of the tournament. Armstrong earned First Team All-Conference for her regular season efforts, while Riley Kippes and Payton Dunn earned Second Team honors.
Volleyball
The Lady Demon volleyball program finished the regular season at Garden City last Thursday with a three- set loss to Ulysses and a hard fought loss to Garden City. Dodge City will be competing in the WAC Tournament this Saturday at Liberal. Hays is the defending WAC Champions with their only loss in last season’s tournament coming at the hands of the Lady Demons. Post-season seeding for volleyball will be next week at the conclusion of the conference tournament weekend.
Red Demon Cross Country
The Red Demon Cross Country team will compete in the WAC Championships this Thursday at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City. Dodge City finished second last year at Mariah Hills and will be looking to dethrone defending champion Garden City.
The Red Demon Cross Country team is fresh off a winning performance at the Salina Invitational last Saturday. The Red Demons were led by David Ultreras who won the meet with a time of 16:20, followed by Danny Lamas who was second at 16:35. The Red Demons placed six runners in the Top 10 at Salina (Angel Vazquez, Brandon Juarez, Mathew Banuelos and Eddie Salinas).
Lady Demon Cross Country
The Lady Demons also finished as WAC runner-up last year and will be looking to continue their past success at the Western Athletic Conference meet. The Lady Demons are coming off a third place finish at the Salina Invitational.
Top performers for Dodge City were Alex Gere – 8th (20:50) and Teressa Martinez – 15th (21:10). The KSHSAA 6A Regional Cross Country Meet will be hosted by Wichita East next Saturday in Augusta at Four Mile Creek Resort. This course was the site of the 6A State Championship meets the past two years. The top three teams will qualify to the 6A State Meet at Rim Rock Farm, home course to the Kansas University Cross Country team.
Red Demon Soccer
Championships begin in October for the Red Demon Soccer program. With a possible seven home games (if you include playoffs), the schedule is full of opportunities for the Red Demons to begin their march to the 6A Final Four, to be held at Stryker Stadium in Wichita the first weekend of November.
The spotlight could not shine any brighter on the Red Demon Soccer program as they defeated Great Bend on Tuesday night to secure their eighth WAC title in the past nine seasons. Dodge City has won 30-straight WAC contests, dating back to 2019. The number-one ranked Red Demons are currently undefeated at 13-0 and face the number-three team in 5A, Blue Valley Southwest, on Friday night in Kansas City. The two programs combined have won a state championship every year since 2016. Dodge City has won two state titles (2016, 2020) while BVSW has four state titles (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021). The Red Demons will play Shawnee Mission South on Saturday before returning home to play Liberal in the regular season finale. The first round of Regional Playoffs will begin on October 25 at Memorial Stadium.
Mapel Resigns as Girls Golf Coach
After twenty-five years as the head coach of the girls’ golf program at Dodge City High School, Jim Mapel is stepping down from his role as Head Girls golf coach. Mapel will remain on staff as the Head Boys golf coach and Social Studies teacher at DCHS. Coach Mapel has served as a coach at Dodge City High School since 1987.
Coach Mapel was hired by the legendary J.C. Riekenberg in 1997 to guide the Girls Golf program after Riekenberg had hired him four years previously to be the Head Boys Coach. Coach Mapel served as a Cross Country coach prior to taking over the Girls program at DCHS.
He took over the program from his high school Head Coach John Chebultz and promptly won the conference title in his first season.
He guided the Lady Demons to a total of five WAC Championships (1997, 2001, 2002, 2007 and 2008) over his 25 years as the head coach. During his tenure his girls’ golf teams qualified for the KSHSAA State Tournament as a team or individually in all 25 seasons.
I would like to thank Coach Clark, the administration, and all of our players the past 25 years for making this experience special for me. I have always had a passion for both the game of golf and Dodge City High School.”
Jim Mapel, former DCHS Girls Golf coach
Coach Mapel’s tenure with the Girls Program was highlighted by the 2001 6A-5A State Championship, as well as finishing as the 2002 6-5A State Runner-up. The following year Mapel coached the individual champion as well – Tara Goedeken. Most recently, Coach Mapel has coached back-to- back Regional Championship teams. This past season, his team qualified for the 6A State Tournament and had a Top 10 finish from Ashlyn Armstrong (9th).
The search for a new Girls Head Coach will begin immediately. The DCHS Athletic Department will place a priority on hiring a certified teacher who has the necessary expertise and experience to lead the Lady Demon golf program.
The DCHS Athletic Department appreciates everything Coach Mapel has done for female golfers over the past 25 years. He will leave a lasting impact on the game of golf at DCHS and across the state. Jim serves on the Kansas Golf Coaches Advisory Board (which was instrumental in changing the format of the State Tournament to a 2-day tournament), as well as his involvement in Kansas Junior Golf Association. We appreciate his time, effort, and dedication to the student-athletes while leading the DCHS Girls golf program.”

Then, on Monday, the Red Demons went to Great Bend to compete.

Senior Luke Gleason shot a 3-over par 74 Thursday afternoon, leading the way as the Red Demons hosted their home golf tournament at Mariah Hills Golf Course.
Overall, the team shot a 346. Davan Smith shot an 88, Ethan Goertzen shot a 91, Cayden Kerr shot a 93, Kale Lowery shot a 97 and Dalton Prater shot a 102.
With his finish, Gleason took home a medal. His fifth-place finish and 74 score were three shots and one place better than his score last year at the same event.
“It was a nice day out there,” Gleason said.
Gleason’s day wasn’t always easy.
On the par- 4 14, Gleason’s tee-shot hit the branches of a tree overhanging the right side a little ways down fairway, bouncing backward into the fairway, but still setting up a long second shot. Gleason got onto the green with his third shot, but bogeyed the hole. In was the second of two straight bogeys for him at that point in the round.
Later on in the round, Gleason recovered.
On 17, he hit a tremendous tee-shot over trees lining the right side of the fairway. His shot landed within about 30 yards of the green. From there, he chipped the ball onto the green to within about five feet of the hole, making the putt after to give himself a birdie.
On 18, Gleason hit a towering shot straight down the center of the fairway. His second shot landed on the edge of the green closest to the tees, with an uphill putt of roughly 10-15 feet left to go.
Gleason’s putt was perfect, carrying what appeared to be a lot of speed,
all of which it needed to get up to the hole and in, giving Gleason his second birdie in a row.
“I just focused on the next shot,” Gleason said. “Our coach says ‘Every shot’s the next most important shot.’ It’s just grind and see what happens.”
Gleason’s group started on hole six. Hole one was thus later in his round, and like 14 earlier in the day, Gleason’s tee shot hit a tree, this time one on the left side of the fairway and much closer to the tee box than the one on 14 was. His shot ended up bouncing off it and continuing down the fairway but ending up in the rough on the right.
That hole, Gleason said, was actually the one he was most proud of Thursday. He ended up bogeying the hole, but also made up for it with a chip-in just a hole later on two.
“I smoked the tree off the tee,” Gleason said. “I’m pretty happy with a bogey though.”
Red Demon head coach Jim Mapel praised Gleason after the round.
“He really stepped up,” Mapel said. “This is his first real good round of the year, and he’s been kind of frustrated. He’s a strong competitor and sometimes he just almost gets a little bit too fired up. In golf, you’ve kind of got to stay even-keel and so he did a good job today.”
Gleason had quite a few birdies Mapel said, but also had some added attention, with multiple family and friends attending to watch.
“He had a lot of people out here following him, which was cool but that’s a lot of pressure when you’re at home really, and for him to perform that well, I really felt good for him,” Mapel said. “That will help his confidence as the season continues.”
That competitive nature
was probably part of the reason he was able to keep his score from snowballing negatively after bad shots or holes.
“He’s a competitor. He’s just a tough competitor,” Mapel said. “We saw that on the basketball court this winter, and the same way on the golf course, and he’s gonna keep working at it, and I think his best rounds are ahead of him yet this year.”
As a team, the Red Demons 346 score wasn’t enough for them to earn a place. That didn’t, however, mean the team didn’t benefit from it, or that it was a bad score for where they are.
“It’s 20 strokes better than what we’ve shot this year as a team,” Mapel said. “We had Ethan Goertzen: 91, and Cayden Kerr: 93. Very good scores, and Davan had an 88. So that’s more where we’re trying to bring our scores down, and having the team support each other 1-6. So I’m very pleased with it.”
