Lady Demon Golfers finish fourth in WAC

The Dodge City High School girls golf team finished in fifth place at the Western Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon in Great Bend.

Chesney Moore led the way by shooting a 47 and earning a seventh place individual medal.

The Red Demons finished fourth in the season WAC standings. Moore, along with senior Makena Konrade, earned honorable mention WAC honors.

The Dodge City girls will travel to Hutchinson on Monday for regionals.

Other scores Makena konrade 52, Emily Stephenson 55, Taylor Starnes 58, Alexis Ontiberos 59 and Ali Phelps 59.

Boys X-Country outruns pack in Newton

The Dodge City High School boys cross country team won their third meet this season over the weekend.

The Red Demons scored 51 tea m points at the Newton Invite on Saturday to take first place ahead of Topeka Washburn Rural who finished with 88 points.

Seniors Marcelo Cruz, Jason Luft and Alex Ultreras all finished in the top-10 with Cruz leading the way by finishing in fifth. Javier Marquez and Brett Groth also placed in the top-20.

The Dodge City girls placed fifth amongst the 13 team field at Newton on Saturday. Sophomore Ayanna Hensley led the way with a ninth place finish. Seniors Coral Neave and America Garcia both placed in the top-30 individually.

The cross country teams will have just one meet left before hosting the Western Athletic Conference championships on Oct. 13. Both of the Red Demon teams won WAC titles last season. The girls team is going for their third straight conference championship.

Lady Demon Tennis team places 3rd at WAC

Throughout the regular season, Dodge City High School girls head tennis coach David Snodgrass said that he wanted to see his team continue to improve so that they would be playing their best tennis by the time October rolled around.

On Monday afternoon in Liberal, Snodgrass did not feel like his team competed to its best ability.

The Red Demons fell to Garden City and Hays by just one point in the Western Athletic Conference championship meet. Garden City won a tiebreaker with the Indians to earn the WAC title.

“I still think our team as a whole was the most talented team but we just didn’t have the fight today,” Snodgrass said. “Hays and Garden City definitely went out there and competed like they wanted to win a WAC championship and they definitely deserved the opportunity.”

screen-shot-2016-10-04-at-9-13-27-am Junior Leah Stein and senior Daniela Villarreal both earned WAC titles, Stein in No. 1 singles and Villarreal in No. 2 singles. Stein was also named WAC Player of the Year.

Stein won all four of her matches which included a hard-fought 8-5 win over Liberal’s Tierra Stoney who lost just one match on Monday. Villarreal dropped one match to Garden City’s Tayrin Tabor in the first round but rebounded with three straight wins to finish the day.

“They did what they needed to do to get those individual championships and help us be in contention as a team,” Snodgrass said.

On the doubles side, Hannah Sowers and Marin Dameron took third place in No. 1 doubles while Abigail Argumedo and Kameron Lowery finished fourth in No. 2 doubles. Sowers and Dameron fell to Garden City 8-2 in round one before ending the day with an 8-3 loss to Hays.

Argumedo and Lowery were blanked by Garden City in the first round and fell to Hays 8-3 to end the day.

“We just have to make sure that we fight and claw and win those decisive points in those tight matches,” Snodgrass said. “All of those games could have gone different ways. Instead of being down 6-1, it could be 4-3.”

The Red Demons will have four days of practice to prepare for regionals this Saturday at Wichita Northwest.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the ladies respond,” Snodgrass said. “I think that they are definitely disappointed and definitely a little frustrated as well. So I hope that they are able to take all of that and respond with the adversity and practice a little harder this week going into regionals.”

Red Demons rout Heights

The quicker the Dodge City High School boys soccer team can score a goal, the quicker they can unlock their opponent’s defense.

On Tuesday, it took the Red Demons about 50 minutes against Hutchinson. On Saturday against Wichita Heights, it took only 3.

Junior Joshua DonJuan found the back of the net early and Dodge City went on to beat the Falcons 6-0 to win its 11th straight game to maintain its perfect record.

“Getting a quick goal changes the outlook for the other team,” Dodge City head coach Saul Hernandez said. “They are going to have to look for a goal and open up play for us. That’s what showed today. We got a lot of opportunities.”

Heights’ best opportunity came in the opening seconds when they booted the opening kick towards Dodge City’s goalkeeper Jorge Ortiz. Ortiz, who had only been between the goal posts for a couple of seconds, reached up and made the save.

Mario Martinez added his 10th goal of the season to give the Red Demons a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute. Fellow junior Francisco Cayetano scored two goals in the second half.

Cayetano, who had scored just one goal on the season, tallied five goals last week which included two against both Hutchinson, Wichita Heights and the game winner against Garden City on Thursday.

“Coach said have confidence in ourselves and shoot from outside (of the penalty box) so that’s helped me a lot and I’ve worked on improving myself and working collectively with the team,” Cayetano said.

With just six games left in their schedule, the Red Demons (11-0, 5-0) have still not lost a game this season. They are one of just three teams that still has a perfect record this season.

“We try not to talk about it,” Hernandez said about his team’s perfect record. “If we focus too much on it, I think it’ll just put more pressure on the guys. We’re taking it game-by-game and that’s how we’re going to keep going the rest of the season.”

The Red Demons will host Hays on Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium.

Red Demons beat Wichita South 35-19

It was a tale of two halves at Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The Dodge City High School football team trailed the Wichita South Titans 19-0 when the whistle was blown for the halftime break.

After some words of encouragement from head coach Dave Foster in the locker room, the Red Demons scored 35 unanswered points on their way to a 35-19 win.

screen-shot-2016-10-03-at-7-18-26-am “Any time you see a group battle back, that’s one thing, but this is a group of kids that has never been in that situation,’ Foster said. ‘All they knew was to stick together and do their jobs and that’s exactly how they handled it.”

A 66 yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Dawson Williams was followed by a 49 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by senior Clay Carpenter.

Foster told his defense that they were going to need to score a touchdown. They exceeded his expectations and scored two.

After Williams scored his second touchdown of the day to give Dodge City a 21-19 lead with 11:18 to play in the game, senior Carlos Rojas returned a fumble for a touchdown on the first play of the next drive.

‘We told each other that it wasn’t over,’ senior safety Samuel Unruh said. ‘We looked at it like a 0-0 ball game and we came out here, stayed as a family and got the job done.’

Williams added a third touchdown with 6:31 to play in the game.

In the first half, the Titans capitalized on Dodge City turnovers the way Dodge City capitalized on Wichita South turnovers in the second half.

18 seconds after a 53 yard touchdown pass from Wichita South quarterback Evan Kruse to AJ Hopper, sophomore Payton Collins scooped up a Dodge City fumbled and returned it for a touchdown.

South scored a touchdown just before the halftime whistle following a third Red Demon fumble to take a 19-0 halftime lead.

Friday’s win snapped a two-game skid for the Red Demons (3-2, 0-1). Both of Dodge City’s losses have come against teams that are both currently 5-0 in Wichita Heights and Great Bend.

“I think playing the teams that we’ve been playing helps you to a certain extent,” Foster said. “We’ve been in the last two games and thought, if we played a little more disciplined, that those are game we can win. Those types of games, even though they are losses, they can help you.”

The Red Demons will play their next three games against Western Athletic Conference opponents starting next Friday at Hays.
