Bowlers have “nice” start to season

Dodge City High School head bowling coach Tyson Clark liked the way his team started their season on Saturday. The Red Demon girls took 8th place and the boys 16th in Wichita over the on Saturday out of the field of 26 teams.

“It is always nice to open at this tournament as it is a great environment and we get to see 26 teams,” Clark said. “Both teams did some nice things on Saturday. We have only had four days of practice and have been busy working on overall physical games and have not had the time to get into the details needed to compete at high level. We now have the first tournament jitters out the way and will improve as the season progresses.”

The Red Demons will host Great Bend and Holcomb on Tuesday at Spare Tyme Bowl. Action will begin at 3 p.m.

Red Demons take first at Maize

The Dodge City High School wrestling team closed out a strong week with a first place finish at the Maize High School Invitational with a team score of 244 on Saturday. The Red Demons had four wrestlers take first place in their respective weight classes.

IMG_0023 Dodge City will host Hays this Thursday in their third WAC dual of the season. The Red Demons beat Garden City last week after falling to Great Bend in their conference opener.

Red Demons look to stay hot

Both the Dodge City High School boys and girls basketball teams will put their three-game winning streak on the line when they travel to Central Plains on Tuesday.

The Oilers are the two-time defending 2A state champions and returned the core of last season’s championship team. “They’re a great test,” Dodge City head coach Kelley Snodgrass said. “Close to everyone returning, state champions, two of the best players in the state. They are just a really solid and physical team. They’re not the typical 2A (team).”

Senior guards Reagan Phelan and Taylor Rolfs highlight the Oilers. Both players havebeenmajorcontributors for the Oilers past two state titles. Phelan is committed to play at Washburn University next season while Rolfs is committed to Fort Hays State University.

Dodge City’s depth could play a major role for the Red Demons, particularly when itcomestodefendingthetwo Oiler standouts.

“We have to keep fresh legs on them because they can attack well and shoot it,” Snodgrass said. “We’ll give them our best shot, defensively.”

Dodge City (5-2) has won its last three games by an average of 42 points.

The Red Demon boy s(4-3), who have also been playing better of late after a slow start to the season, will also be challenged on Tuesday.

The Central Plains boys team also returned a majority of last season’s squad that took second place at the Tournament of Champions and were the 2A state runner ups.

“They play well together,” Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton said. “It’s kind of refreshing watching a team like that.”

After struggling to score early in the year, the Red Demons have found a better rhythm offensively during their three-game winning-streak.

During Dodge City’s 1-3 start, the Red Demons eclipsed the 50-point mark just once. In their past three games, the Red Demons are averaging just under 68 points per contest.

Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 1.30.15 PM“I think it’s just the natural progression of the season,” Hamilton said. “We are becoming more comfortable, we’re finding good shots and we’re being aggressive rebounders especially with Noah Williams and I am going to give Bryce Unruh some credit to.”

Through the Red Demons first seven games, senior Dayton McGroarty has been DodgeCity’s most consistent scoring threat. The senior guard is averaging 15 points per game.

“I think (McGroarty) has blossomed into an extremely good high school basketball player,” Hamilton said. “He has a knack of getting to the basket, shoots well enough to keep people honest and can defend.”

The girls are scheduled to tipoff at 6:15 p.m. with the boys game following at Central Plains High School on Tuesday.

WPMC official corporate partner of TOC

The Dodge City High School Athletic Department announced today that Western Plains Medical Complex has chosen to continue as the Official Corporate Partner of the Tournament of Champions. The 2016 TOC is the 73rd annual tournament and the fifth year that Western Plains has sponsored the event. Western Plains has extended their partnership with the tournament for another five year period – extending through the 2021 TOC.

Western Plains Medial ComplexThe Tournament of Champions is the longest running invitational boys’ basketball tournament west of the Mississippi, and for seventy-three years has showcased the best high school basketball talent in the state of Kansas.

This year’s tournament will also mark the fifth year that games have been played at the United Wireless Arena. The UWA also hosts the SPIAAA league tournament and the 1A Div. 2 KSHSAA State Basketball Tournament.

Dayton Moore confirmed as FCA Speaker

Dodge City High School FCA is pleased to announce that Dayton Moore has accepted an invitation to speak at this year’s TOC-FCA Breakfast. The breakfast has been hosted by FCA since 1981. This year’s breakfast will be held at Dodge City High School beginning at 8:30am. Tickets may be purchased in the DCHS Athletic Office, at the TOC, or the morning of the event at DCHS.

Dayton MooreDayton Moore became the sixth general manager in Royals history on June 8, 2006. Under Moore’s leadership, the Royals built one of the best farm systems in baseball en route to winning the 2015 World Series in the club’s second consecutive trip to the Fall Classic, and first World Series championship since 1985. That was following the club reaching the postseason for the first time in 29 years as they won the 2014 American League championship by setting a Major League record with eight-straight wins in the playoffs.

After the 2014 season, the Royals were selected as the Baseball America “Organization of the Year” for just the second time since the publication started the award in 1982, and Moore was awarded the “Executive of the Year” by Major League Baseball (GIBBY Awards) as well as the Kansas City Sports Commission.

Moore, a native of Wichita, Kansas, was elected to the State of Kansas’ Baseball Hall of Fame and named Kansan of the Year by the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas. Moore was also tabbed Alumnus of the Year by George Mason University. Moore graduated from George Mason University in 1989 with a degree in physical education and health, and later earned his master’s degree in athletic administration from GMU. Before joining the Royals, Moore worked in various capacities in player development for the Atlanta Braves from 1994-2006.

A leader in the Kansas City community, Moore is a regular speaker at numerous community events each year. In 2013, Moore started the “C” You In the Major Leagues Foundation. It was created to support youth baseball, education, families in crisis and faith-based programs and organizations.

He and his wife, Marianne, reside in Leawood, Kan., and have two daughters, Ashley and Avery, and a son, Robert.
