The Dodge City Red Demons beat the Thomas More Prep Monarchs 11-1 Thursday night on the turf practice field at Dodge City High School.
Five Red Demons scored in the victory. Four of them were seniors.
Red Demons head coach Saul Hernandez said he hadn’t been worried about the team coming out overly-relaxed, despite having clinched the Western Athletic Conference against Hays onTuesday.
What he didn’t like was the goal the Monarchs got Thursday night.
“The think that I’m not liking is not getting the clean sheets,” Hernandez said. “We’ve gotta clean that up. We’ve gotta get the clean sheets against good teams. They’re gonna put more in the back of the net if we don’t fix what we need to fix. That’s the thing that I’m concerned about as of right now, but it’s nothing that we can’t fix.”
The current group of seniors has been the core of the team for the last few years.
They were on full-display Thursday night.
Red Demons senior Mario Martinez opened up the scoring early to give the Red Demons a 1-0 lead. Not long after, junior Josue Castillo scored to make it a 2-0 game. Castillo’s goal, however, was the last one not scored by a senior on the team.
Not long after him, senior Omar
Estrada had a ball bounce to him after a failed crossing attempt by the Red Demons, and he drilled it home to make the game 3-0 Red Demons.
The night, however, belonged to Martinez and fellow seniors Joshua Donjuan and Miguel Baca. All three had hat tricks Thursday night. Baca scored the last goal of the first half to give the Red Demons a 6-1 lead at halftime.
He also scored the last two in the game, the final one of which ended the game at 11-1.
“It’s fun winning, and we want to keep rolling on,” Baca said.
Dodge City’s next game is scheduled for Tuesday against Great Bend High School, at 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium in Dodge City, Kansas.
