The Dodge City Red Demons wrestling team lost a dual to Great Bend Thursday night by a score of 40-35.
With the loss, the Red Demons are now 6-3 (0-1) this Dual season. They’ll next be in action Saturday at the Bishop Carroll Invitational for their last competition of the 2017 calendar year.
Dodge City feel behind early but battled back to take a lead on freshman Andrew Rodriguez’s victory by major decision over Great Bend’s Brentley Baldwin in the 106 weight division.
Despite taking a late lead, however, the Red Demons lost after Great Bend’s Drew Liles pinned Dodge City sophomore Anthony Mariche in 113 match.
Despite the loss, Dodge City head coach Lars Lueders said it was a good performance by the team.
“I thought this was the best we wrestled all year,” Lueders said via email. “Some of our freshmen really impressed and got some signature wins.”
The Red Demons also were in a good spot despite losing two matches the team expected they would need to win in order to Thursday night.
“Before the Dual We thought we needed to get pins at 160 and 182 in order to win,” Lueders said. “It shows how tough we wrestled when those two matches go the opposite way we thought and we were still in a position to get the team win.”
Notes from coach Lueders:
– Daniel Rojas beat a kid that went 2-2 at the 5A State Tournament last season
– Preston Moon beat at kid that was ranked 6th in 5A last season
