Demons win postseason opener

The Dodge City High School boys soccer team got their postseason started off on the right foot on Tuesday night.
The Red Demons (17-0) rolled past Wichita Southeast 10-0, finishing the game with 12:14 left on the game clock when senior Rodrigo Angulo scored his second goal of the game.
‘That’s what we were hoping for,’ Dodge City head coach Saul Hernandez said.
Junior Francisco Cayetano got Dodge City on the board in the 2nd minute of the game. Fellow junior Mario Martinez added the second goal 5 minutes later.
Joshua DonJuan, who led the Red Demons with 19 goals during the regular season, added four more in Tuesday’s win. Six Red Demons found themselves on the score sheet in all.
Dodge City will host Lawrence Free State (7-7-2) on Thursday in the regional championship game. Free State beat Topeka 3-1 on Monday to advance.
‘They have a tough schedule,’ Hernandez said. ‘They play a lot of eastern teams and they play a different style of soccer so they can be tricky. I didn’t want to look too far ahead and start thinking about them before hand but it can be a tricky game.’
While the Red Demons are far from their ultimate goal of a 6A state championship, Hernandez knows that his team has to take it one game at a time in the playoffs.
‘We just have to stay focused and stick with our philosophy,’ Hernandez said. ‘If we start steering from that and we start thinking too far ahead, our season could end abruptly so we have to be sharp for the next game.’
Thursday’s game will begin at 6 p.m.
