The Dodge City Red Demons boys baseball team split their season-opening series with Wichita East Saturday, losing the first game 5-1 before winning the second game 3-0.
In the first game, head coach Zach Shipley said the team’s pitchers played well enough, but the defense behind them wasn’t what it needed to be, making as many as four errors, some of which set up their starter’s eight walks.
“It wasn’t a very pretty game and we let one get away from us,” Shipley said.
In the second game, Red Demon junior Noah Sowers pitched a complete game.
“I think he threw an 85-pitch complete game,”Shipley said. “The biggest thing with him was he got ahead of the hitters. I think he walked two or three, I think we had one error behind him, but he got ahead of guys. Strike one is so key for us and key for anybody in baseball, but that was big for Noah. He pitched to contact. He didn’t have a lot of strikeouts. He dictated the count, he dictates what pitch these guys
are hitting and it let our defense work and we were a little more comfortable back there second game defensively.”
Despite the win, the team still has plenty to work on.
“Our timing is still lacking a little bit, we gotta find the barrel a little more often,” Shipley said.
The Red Demons are next in action Friday when they head to Wichita South for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
