A strong running game, solid defense, and key second-half plays helped the Dodge City Red Demons earn a 27-8 win over Wichita South on Friday night. The victory moves Dodge City to 2-1 on the season as they continue to build momentum.
The Red Demons opened the game with a long, clock-chewing drive that took up most of the first quarter. Despite moving the ball deep into Titan territory, they were stopped just short and turned it over on downs inside the 5-yard line. Dodge City’s defense quickly responded, forcing a punt to keep the game scoreless heading into the second quarter.
It didn’t take long for the Red Demons to get on the board. On the first play of the second quarter, Fabian Ortiz broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run, giving Dodge City a 7-0 lead. Wichita South answered quickly with a swing pass that turned into a long touchdown run by Johnson. The Titans converted a two-point attempt to take an 8-7 lead.
Dodge City answered with another steady drive, capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run from Ty Scheck to make it 13-8. After forcing another punt before the half, the Red Demons had one more chance to score, but a pass into the end zone fell incomplete as time expired.
Wichita South opened the second half with the ball, but Dodge City made a big play right away. Ortiz picked off a pass near midfield and returned it to the Titan 3-yard line. On the next play, Scheck found the end zone again for his second score of the night, pushing the lead to 20-8.
Both teams settled in during the third quarter, but Dodge City added one more touchdown early in the fourth—Scheck’s third of the game—to make it 27-8. From there, the Red Demon defense held firm, keeping Wichita South out of the end zone for the rest of the night.
With the win, Dodge City moves to 2-1 and looks ahead to a big matchup next week. The Red Demons return home next Friday to take on the Liberal Redskins for homecoming and the start of Western Athletic Conference play.
