Red Demons remain undefeated with 1-0 win
The Dodge City High School Red Demons Soccer team fought to a 1-0 win Tuesday night against the Great Bend Panthers.
The win moved them to 13-0 this season.
The Red Demons started the game slow, allowing the Panthers to play offensively and get shots. The teams went into halftime scoreless.
Before the game, a ceremony was held recognizing the team’s seniors. Head coach Saul Hernandez said he didn’t like the team’s play.
“We were complacent,” Hernandez said. “I don’t know if it was all of the festivities before the game, but I didn’t see the focus that I’ve been seeing all season long and it kind of scared me before the game started, and it showed first half.”
Senior Mario Martinez got a pass from fellow senior Omar Estrada and scored 1:42 into the second half. His goal ended up as the lone one in the game, in part due to a strong effort by another Red Demon senior: Jesus Herrera.
“He had some big saves for us and he kept us in the game,” Hernandez said. ”(If) they get a goal they pack it even more in, they were packed in in the back the whole game and, (a Panthers goal) would have changed the whole game.”
“He’s one of the few guys that had the high energy from the beginning, (and) kept it throughout the whole game,” Hernandez said. “He’s one of the guys that didn’t quit, his energy level never dropped, he was trying to inspire his teammates to work harder. So for us coaches, the ones that stood out the most were Jesus (Herrera) and Steven. They played outstanding today.”
Despite the win, however, Hernandez said the team still has work to do.
“We’re still not where we want to be,” Hernandez said.
The Red Demons will try to get closer to that when they head to Overland Park, Kansas to take on the Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints on Saturday. The Saints entered Tuesday night 6-2-2 this season.
The game between them and Dodge City is scheduled for 7 p.m.
