The Dodge City Red Demon football team is 1-2 through three games this season. On Friday, they will host Liberal in their Western Athletic Conference opener.
Despite having dropped two of the first three games of the season, confidence is high for the Red Demons. Head coach Dave Foster has been preaching to his squad that they are the best 1-2 team in the state.
“I told the players ‘how close are we to being a 3-0 team? We’re two snaps away.’ It’s a dropped ball here, a dropped interception here and some breaks that didn’t go our way,” Foster said. “We’re two football plays away from being a 3-0 team and we’re not going to let that change our mindset because in reality it doesn’t effect anything.”
The Red Demons have not struggled to score points so far this season. Through three games, Dodge City is averaging just under 48 points per game. While the offense has being lighting up the scoreboard, the undersized defense has struggled.
In the two losses this season, the Red Demons are allowing 50 points per contest. The injury bug has bitten the Dodge City defense in the early part of the season. Three starters have been sidelined with injuries.
“Those injuries happen,” Foster said. “Last year we had a similar rash of injuries. Very similar to this season but it is what it is. You take the kids that are healthy and you continue to play the game.”
