The Dodge City High School boys swim team delivered a determined performance at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on February 12 in Great Bend, finishing third overall with 419 points in one of the closest finishes of the meet.
Dodge City trailed second-place Garden City High School by just three points, while Hays High School claimed the team title with 523 points. Host Great Bend High School finished fourth, followed by Liberal High School in fifth.

The Red Demons relied on balanced scoring, strong relay swims and record-breaking individual performances to stay in contention throughout the evening.
Dodge City opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Jacoby Sutton, Jameson Sutton, Jordan Schneweis and Easton Steiner touched the wall in 1:57.79, setting the tone for the night.
Steiner turned in one of the most historic performances in program history. He placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a state consideration time of 1:58.98, breaking the previous school record of 2:01.82 set by Allen Richter. Steiner’s swim marked the first time a Dodge City swimmer has gone under the two-minute mark in the event.
He followed that performance with another record-breaking and state consideration time swim in the 500 freestyle, finishing second in 5:31.00. In doing so, he surpassed Richter’s former school record of 5:35.87, rewriting the record board in both distance freestyle events in the same meet.
Jacoby Sutton added valuable points in the sprint and backstroke events. He finished second in the 50 freestyle in 24.19 and placed second in the 100 backstroke at 1:04.71. Sutton also anchored two relays, including the 400 freestyle relay that closed the meet.
Jordan Schneweis had one of the most impressive swims of the night finishing third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:28.06) and added points in the 100 butterfly. Jameson Sutton also scored in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke while swimming on two relays.
The Red Demons ended the night strong in the 400 freestyle relay. Jacoby Sutton, Easton Steiner, Alejandro Guerrero and Jameson Sutton combined for a second-place finish in 3:57.38, that helped Dodge City secure its third-place finish.
Additional scoring swims from Alejandro Guerrero, Kylan Beers, Itzaid Ruiz Millan, Andrew Kimball, Angel Mendez Perez, Mateo Marin Vera and Christian Chavez highlighted the team’s depth. In a championship meet where every place matters, those points proved essential.
Dodge City’s third-place finish underscores how competitive the WAC remains. More importantly, Steiner’s double school-record performance signals a new standard for the program. With momentum building and confidence rising, the Red Demons now turn their focus to postseason competition, aiming to carry this breakthrough performance into the next stage of the season.
