Demons drop first dual

Even though the Dodge City High School wrestling team did not get their season started off with a team win, head coach Lars Lueders took a lot of positives away on Thursday night.
The 6A No. 4 Red Demons fell to 5A No. 8 Maize 39-32 in their first dual of the season. Three Red Demons came out on the losing end of two point decisions which included two overtime losses.
“I felt good about a lot of things,” Lueders said. “The reason we lost the dual was because we weren’t aware of match situations that were important, especially our inexperienced and younger guys.
“It’s really important that we learn those. So whether we won or lost the dual has no factor in my mind, it’s just about cleaning up those things.”
The six Dodge City wrestlers that earned wins on Thursday did so with bonus points.
In his first match back after missing his junior season, senior Dylan Servis pinned his opponent to earn his first win of the year.
Dodge City was without senior Devon Plaza who won the 6A 132-pound state championship last season. Lueders is expecting to field a similar lineup this Saturday when the Red Demons travel to Gardner Edgerton.
“Looking past (Saturday) I think that we’ll have more of a full lineup,” Lueders said. “We’re straightening some things out and we are healing some people so time will only tell how long it will take. Once everyone is good to go, we should be full.”
Dodge City is one of three ranked 6A teams that will compete in the competitive field at Gardner this Saturday.
