Dodge City takes 8th in Gardner

In their first tournament of the season, the Dodge City High School wrestling team placed eighth out of a competitive 17-team field on Saturday.
Amongst the 17-team field at Saturday’s Gardner Edgerton Invitational were five ranked teams from Kansas, three of which earned team trophies at state last season. Other programs included Broken Arrow from Oklahoma and Southeast Polk from Iowa.
“We had great attitudes, team chemistry, and a great learning mindset,” Dodge City head coach Lars Lueders said. “This is the best opening tournament in my tenure as far as mindset and team chemistry.I can honestly say that our wrestlers wrestled hard and gave full effort in every one of their matches. This is important in order for us to achieve our goals.”
Seniors Tylor Garcia and Dylan Servis were the Red Demons top two performers as the pair of seniors both took third place. Both Garcia and Servis fell in the championship bracket to wrestlers who won an individual state championship last season.
Kenedy Escobedo, Ansony Quezada and Marcos Fisher all tallied double-digit point totals for the Red Demons as well. Fisher finished fourth at 220-pounds while Escobedo placed fifth at 120 and Quezada earned sixth place at 195.
“Kenedy Escobedo, Ansony Quezada, and Marcos Fisher really stuck out in my mind,” Lueders said. “They have improved tremendously and could really do something at the end of the season if they keep improving and working hard.”
The Dodge City varsity “B team” won the Lincoln Darrell Schmeidler Invitational as well on Saturday.
The Red Demon wrestlers will travel to Colby on Friday for their second tournament of the season.
