Dodge City undone by pins in 43-32 loss to Eagles
In the final home dual of the season, the Dodge City High School wrestling team fell to the Colby Eagles 43-32.
10 of the 13 matches were decided by pin on Thursday night, six of which went against the Red Demons.
“I think some kids came out really hard and tough and maybe didn’t have the technique to win and I think others didn’t have the right mindset,” Dodge City head coach Lars Lueders said. “Especially late, getting pinned in close matches, in a dual setting that can’t happen. Tomorrow morning we have a practice at 6 (a.m.) and we’re going to work fighting pressure for the whole hour and a half that we’re in there.”
Colby started the dual off with three-straight pins to take an early 18-0 lead before Dodge City senior Dylan Servis got the Red Demons on the board with a pin of his own. Sophomore Marcos Fisher followed with a pin after an open slot which tied the dual at 18-18.
Two pins by the Eagles that followed helped the defending 4A state champions take control of the dual and wrestle with the lead the rest of the way.
In one of only three duals that came down to a decision, Dodge City senior Kenedy Escobedo came close to pinning Colby senior Tate Carney. Escobedo got the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the 4A 120-pound class on his back twice before Carney was able to grind out the 16-11 decision win.
“(Escobedo) wrestled really well,” Lueders said. “He did really good, he should’ve finished it. He had (Carney) on his back a couple of times. If he would’ve finished it and pinned him, that’s a big win for him. Now we know what we need to work on because that was really good on his part.”
Thursday night’s dual was the final time that the five seniors in Dodge City’s varsity lineup were able to wrestle under the spotlight in front of their home fans.
“It was amazing,” senior Tylor Garcia said after pinning his opponent in the last match of the night. “I’m not going to be here again so I had to go out and give it my all.”
The Red Demons will finish up the regular season next Thursday when they travel to Liberal.
