Western Athletic Conference Dominates Top Spots with Dodge City Leading the Way
Great Bend, Kansas – Continuing their early season momentum, the Lady Demons emerged victorious at the 2023 Christmas Clash held in Great Bend. This annual event, boasting the title of the largest single weight Bracket tournament in the state of Kansas, drew in 370 wrestlers from across the region.
The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) asserted its dominance, securing four out of the top five team spots in a testament to the conference’s current collective prowess in girls wrestling.

- Elizabeth Ramirez (8-1) – 2nd Place: Ramirez was impressive again – pinning her way to the tournament finals. Ramirez suffered her first loss of the season against undefeated Jaidyn Alvarado (Junction City) in the championship match.

- Miranda Alvarez (3-2) – 7th Place: Alvarez fought her way to a 7th-place finish. Her performance added 15.0 crucial team points.

- Ashley Alonso (10-0) – 1st Place: Alonso remained undefeated on the season as she claimed the top spot at 110 – defeating previously unbeaten Autumn Wilson (Tonganoxie) in the championship match.

- Alea Smith (8-5) – 11th Place: Smith wrestled seven matches over the course of the two-day tournament, winning her final match to finish in 11th place.

- Ariana De La Rosa (10-1) – 1st Place: De La Rosa captured the title at 130 with a fall over previously unbeaten Abbygayl Jackson (Oakley). The biggest match of the day may have been when De La Rosa won by major decision over previously undefeated Daizy Gomez (Great Bend).

- Hailey Ramos (8-1) – 1st Place: Ramos finished first defeating Maci Pearson (Olathe West) in the final match. Ramos defeated two WAC opponents on her way to the title.

- Yareli Garcia (9-1) – 3rd Place: Garcia fought back from her first defeat of the season to Destiny Gonzalez (Goodland) to secure the 3rd spot in her weight class. She defeated Lyrica Orosco (Hoisington) in her 3rd place match.

- Yoselyn Rubio (8-2) – 2nd Place: Rubio finished in 2nd place dropping her finals match to undefeated Brooke Smith (Oakley).

- Liliana Aroyo (7-2) – 5th Place: Smith also took down Aroyo on her way to the 155 title. However, Aroyo’s strong performance secured a 5th-place finish.

- Erika Sandoval (6-4) – 7th Place: Sandoval’s weekend led to a 7th-place finish defeating teammate Castro in consolation bracket.

- Naomi Orozco (9-2) – 5th Place: Orozco’s outstanding performance secured a 5th-place finish as she won by fall over Caydance Carter (Plainville) in the final match of the day.
Coach Tate Lowe was excited to see the team continue to improve and put the work in required to meet the early season expectations for this team. The team next travels to Great Bend for a huge WAC dual on Thursday.
