The Dodge City Lady Demon Cross Country team turned in an impressive performance at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships, finishing second overall with a team score of 46 points, just behind Great Bend’s 31. The meet was held Thursday afternoon at Willow Tree Golf Course in Liberal.
Freshman Olivia Springer led the Lady Demons with a strong fifth-place finish, crossing the line in 17:14.83. She was closely followed by teammates Anna Clevenger (6th, 17:36.89) and Karen Perez Martinez (7th, 17:39.08), giving Dodge City three runners inside the top ten.
Senior leadership also played a key role for the Lady Demons. Lilian Arroyo Alba placed 13th in 19:02.10, and Daya Arroyo Alba was right behind in 15th with a time of 19:05.95, rounding out the scoring five for Dodge City.
Freshman Cruz Ramos Grave (19:45.02) and Janelle Barragan (19:57.07) provided valuable depth as displacers, both finishing inside the top 30.
Great Bend took home the WAC title with 31 points, led by freshman Decora Schroeter, who won the individual championship in 16:20.23. Garden City placed third with 71 points, followed by Hays (86) and Liberal (110).
The Lady Demons will look to carry their momentum into the upcoming regional meet as they aim to qualify for the KSHSAA State Championships.
