The Dodge City Red Demon Boys Cross Country team raced to an impressive second-place finish at the 2025 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships, held Thursday afternoon at Willow Tree Golf Course in Liberal. The Red Demons posted a team score of 46 points, finishing behind Garden City’s dominant performance of 22 points.
Junior Gerardo Gamez Mora continued his standout season, leading the Red Demons with a runner-up finish in 17:26.08, just 16 seconds behind Garden City’s individual champion, Trevor Fry (17:10.52).
Senior Rylan Johnson placed 7th overall with a time of 18:05.22, followed by Alex Covarrubias (10th, 18:13.45), Lorenzo Ramos (13th, 18:17.67), and Guerra Carmona (14th, 18:17.81) to complete the team’s scoring five. Dodge City’s strong pack running helped them edge Great Bend for the runner-up spot.
Sophomore Martinez Delgado (18:27.29) and Jonathan Pelton (18:46.22) also ran well as displacers, both finishing in the top 20 overall.
Garden City took home the team title with 22 points, placing all five scorers inside the top eight. Great Bend finished third with 75 points, followed by Hays (105) and Liberal (132).
With their strong WAC finish, the Red Demons will now turn their attention to the regional meet, where they aim to qualify for the KSHSAA State Championships.
