The Dodge City High School football program will begin its fall campaign this Friday night as the “Red Demons” visit the Wichita West “Pioneers” at Heights Stadium in Wichita. This will be the [17th] meeting all-time between the two schools, and the second consecutive time as the season opener. The Red Demons have won six straight season opening contests.
Series History
The Red Demons have faced the Pioneers seventeen times in the storied history of both programs. The Red Demons first played the Pioneers in 1976 with West winning the inaugural contest by a score of 20-7. The overall series record has Dodge City with a (10-6) advantage. The series hasbeenallaboutstreaksaftertheinitialcontest. TheRed Demons won five consecutive games from 1977-1992. From 1993-2001, the Pioneers ran off five consecutive wins. The Red Demons are currently on a five-game winning streak versus West, with the Red Demons winning last year, 27-18.
Wichita West is coming off a (2-8) playoff season – and return 27 seniors. Leading the way is 6-foot-3, 190-pound
senior quarterback Chaz Capps, an honorable mention All- Class 6A pick last season. Capps started four games at quarterback as a freshman, split time at quarterback and played defensive back as a sophomore and was the full- time starter last season.
This is the first of three consecutive contests for the Red Demons versus Wichita City League opponents. Next Friday night, Dodge City will host the Wichita Southeast “Buffaloes”. The Red Demons then return to Heights Stadium to face Wichita Heights the following week.
