The Dodge City Red Demons boys soccer team advanced to the second round of their 6A regional bracket by beating the Hutchinson Salthawks 7-0 Tuesday night.
Dodge City will play Wichita-East High School at 6 p.m. Thursday night in Dodge City’s Memorial Stadium.
Dodge City played with one less man than Hutchinson for the entire second half of the game after Dodge City’s Francisco Cayetano got a red card at the end of the first half.
It didn’t seem to matter. Red Demons came out firing in the second half, scoring three goals in the first eight minutes of it, and four in the first 10.
Red Demons head coach Saul Hernandez said he didn’t know what happened on Cayetano’s red card, but said he thought it fired up the team.
He said he didn’t change any of the offense either.
“The boys came out with fire and they wanted to prove a point, and they did,” Hernandez said.
Senior Miguel Baca opened the scoring for the Red Demons in the first half. Later in the half, Diego Olivares scored to make it 2-0. He had two goals in the game.
Josue Castillo, Alan Lopez, Cesar Alvarez and Erik Martinez also scored for the Red Demons.
Alan Lopez and Erik Martinez are the lone freshman on the varsity team.
“We’ve expected a lot from these two freshmen,” Hernandez said. “We thought that they started good and then throughout the season they’ve been kind of lagging, but we needed them to step up today and they did.”
