The Shawnee Mission South Raiders scored four goals in the first half Friday night, beating the Dodge City Red Demons by a final score of 6-0.
The Red Demon offense struggled all night, rarely so much as crossing midfield.
“It can count to the quality of team as well,” Red Demons head coach Saul Hernandez said. “They’re a top-caliber team, and we knew that with them coming in.”
As good of a team as they were, Hernandez said this young group of Red Demons can learn from this loss not just this season but in the future ones.
The Raiders were good with both their first touches when they got the ball, and afterward, Hernandez said.
On defense, the Shawnee Mission South passing attack was devastating, and allowed the Raiders to get consistent scoring opportunities.
It got better after halftime though, and Hernandez said the girls on his team learned even in Friday’s game from the first half to the second one.
“I felt that second half we made a few adjustments that we needed to, and
slowed ‘em down a little more than the first half,” Hernandez said. “It was just a learning experience, we’re note gonna dwell on this too much: They’re a quality team, it’s early, we’re a young team, we have a lot of room to improve and when you play good teams this early on, our weaknesses are exposed a little bit more easily and it’s to our benefit as well for when we play throughout the season.”
The Red Demons move to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference.
They head to Wichita South High School for a three-game tournament starting Monday at 3 p.m.
The Red Demons will next play in Dodge City on April 5 against Hays Thomas More Prep-Marian. That game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.
