A big sixth inning from Hays Thomas More Prep-Marian in game two of Tuesday’s doubleheader left the Dodge City High School softball team without a win in their first two games of the season.
In game two on Tuesday, the Red Demons took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning after a double by Emily Stephenson was followed by a single by Reiyna Cecil. TMP responded with eight runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Dodge City 10-3.
“(We gave up) some walks and (TMP) got some people on base and that was definitely a big momentum shift,” Dodge City head coach Heather Steiner said. “They executed on bunts and got some timely hits.”
Despite the 10-3 loss, Steiner was happier with her team’s performance in game two as opposed to the first game of the doubleheader. The Red Demons dropped game one 6-2.
“I felt like in game two we came back after losing game one and (our) energy was good, our heads were up and we were cheering,” Steiner said. “We hit the ball better, at times we hit the ball right at people, but I felt like the girls were making good solid contact but just not finding the gaps.”
Dodge City will host Wichita South on Friday in their home opener. First pitch of Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.
