The Dodge City Red Demons cross country teams are heading to Great Bend, Kansas today to run at the Western Athletic Conference cross country meet.
This year’s event starts at 4 p.m. and takes place at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. Both the girls and boys teams are scheduled to compete inthe event.
Girls cross country coach Brian Lenz said the team has started to run its best at the right time.
“We’ve had our best two weeks the last two weeks,” Lenz said.
The team probably won’t be favored, that distinction likely belongs to Liberal and Garden City, but Lenz said the top four teams, which he thinks also includes Dodge City and Great Bend, are all close together in talent.
“I think the top four teams will all be very tight and it’ll come down to who has the really good day and performs well (today), Lenz said.
The way the team has been running lately, Lenz said it’s exciting for the team.
“We’re running our best right now, so we’re kind of looking forward to it, excited for it, ready to get out there and compete,” Lenz said.
What remains to be seen is how missing out on a scheduled meet will affect the team. The Red Demons were one of the teams scheduled to run in Salina, Kansas last Saturday.
Heavy rains the night before, however, forced organizers to cancel the meet.
“We were disappointed because we were wanting to go compete,” Lenz said. “You take the positive from it; that you get a little more rested (and) ready to go.”
After today’s meet, the team will have until Oct. 21st, when Regionals are scheduled to take place.
“Garden City, what it looks like right now, is the top team in our regional also,” Lenz said. “So if we can compete with them (today), we know we’re ready to compete with them at Regional. It’ll be kind of a good marker for us as to where we’re at.”
