Lady Demon Wrestlers Bring Home Rocky Welton Title
GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The 3rd Annual Rocky Welton Girls Tournament continues to grow as twenty-four schools were represented from across the region, with Dodge City taking home the championship crown. Led by first place finishes from Ashley Alonso, Ariana de la Rosa, Hailey Ramos, and Yareli Garcia the Dodge City team featured eight Top-4 finishes and showcased their depth throughout the tournament.
In the 110-pound class, Ashley Alonso remained undefeated improving her season record to (27-0). Alonso’s pinned her way to the finals and finished the tournament (4-0), culminating in a decision [4-0] over Avery Hinojos (27-3) of Newton in the finals.
Other standout performances included Ariana De La Rosa (26-3) in the 130-pound class, who secured first place with pins in all four of her matches. Hailey Ramos (30-5) continued Dodge City’s success in the 135-pound class, claiming the top spot with a series of impressive victories. Ramos won by decision (6-0) in her first match before winning in the finals against Ivy Davis (24-5) of Lakin by fall. Yareli Garcia (28-3) in the 145-pound class, also pinned all four of her opponents on her way to claiming the championship.
Amongst the notable performances for Dodge City was Elizabeth Ramirez (28-4), who secured second place in the 100-pound class. Miranda Alvarez (27-11), competing in the 105-pound class, secured fifth place contributing valuable points to Dodge City’s overall standing in the tournament. Yessenia Castro (15-9) placed 7th at 115, Dayanara Garcia (13-8) placed 5th at 140, and Liliana Arroyo (27-5) placed 3rd at 155. Erika Sandoval (22-12) lost by decision in the finals [4-3] which earned her second place, while Naomi Orozco (24-10) finished fourth overall at 190.
Alonso was also named the Outstanding Girl Wrestler of the Tournament. The Lady Demons return home on Saturday, February 3rd to take on Garden City and Hays in a couple of WAC duals at the DCHS Fieldhouse.
