Lady Demon Wrestlers Bring Home Rocky Welton Title

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The 3rd Annual Rocky Welton Girls Tournament continues to grow as twenty-four schools were represented from across the region, with Dodge City taking home the championship crown. Led by first place finishes from Ashley Alonso, Ariana de la Rosa, Hailey Ramos, and Yareli Garcia the Dodge City team featured eight Top-4 finishes and showcased their depth throughout the tournament.

In the 110-pound class, Ashley Alonso remained undefeated improving her season record to (27-0). Alonso’s pinned her way to the finals and finished the tournament (4-0), culminating in a decision [4-0] over Avery Hinojos (27-3) of Newton in the finals.

Other standout performances included Ariana De La Rosa (26-3) in the 130-pound class, who secured first place with pins in all four of her matches. Hailey Ramos (30-5) continued Dodge City’s success in the 135-pound class, claiming the top spot with a series of impressive victories. Ramos won by decision (6-0) in her first match before winning in the finals against Ivy Davis (24-5) of Lakin by fall. Yareli Garcia (28-3) in the 145-pound class, also pinned all four of her opponents on her way to claiming the championship.

Amongst the notable performances for Dodge City was Elizabeth Ramirez (28-4), who secured second place in the 100-pound class. Miranda Alvarez (27-11), competing in the 105-pound class, secured fifth place contributing valuable points to Dodge City’s overall standing in the tournament. Yessenia Castro (15-9) placed 7th at 115, Dayanara Garcia (13-8) placed 5^th at 140, and Liliana Arroyo (27-5) placed 3^rd at 155. Erika Sandoval (22-12) lost by decision in the finals [4-3] which earned her second place, while Naomi Orozco (24-10) finished fourth overall at 190.

Alonso was also named the Outstanding Girl Wrestler of the Tournament. The Lady Demons return home on Saturday, February 3^rd to take on Garden City and Hays in a couple of WAC duals at the DCHS Fieldhouse.

Sunflower Bank named official corporate partner of the Backyard Battle Rivalry Series

The Dodge City and Liberal High School Athletic Departments are pleased to announce that Sunflower Bank has chosen to partner with both schools for naming rights to the Backyard Battle Rivalry Series.

Dodge City and Liberal have been competing on the football field since 1919. In 1921, the rivalry moved to the basketball court. Fast forward to the 2023-24 school year – the rivalry includes multiple match-ups across 20 sports each year! Over the course of the past 100 years the rivalry has grown not only in intensity but also in the number of events hosted by the two communities.

The rivalry series will begin this winter as Dodge City High School and Liberal High School will compete for a trophy that will be presented each time the two schools compete in the following: Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys & Girls Wrestling. The series hopes to expand to several more potential events over the course of the spring and fall seasons.

Dodge City Lady Demon Wrestling Team Dominates 6th Annual Ladycat Classic

On the final weekend before the Christmas Break, the Dodge City Lady Demon Wrestling Team emerged victorious at the 6th Annual Ladycat Classic. The Lady Demons not only showcased their top of podium strength, but overall competitive team depth heading into the second half of the season.

100 Weight Class – Elizabeth Ramirez (12-2)

Elizabeth Ramirez delivered an outstanding performance in the 100 weight class, claiming the 2nd place spot and contributing 20.5 crucial team points.

Round 1: Elizabeth Ramirez defeated Peyton Hennes (Newton) with a decisive fall in just 1 minute and 19 seconds.

Round 2: A swift victory followed as Ramirez secured a fall over Aubrey Montemeyor (Kapaun Mt. Carmel) in 32 seconds.
Round 3: Ramirez continued her winning streak, pinning Ellie Ayres (Topeka Seaman) in 1 minute and 29 seconds.
Championship Bracket: The intensity rose as Ramirez clinched victory in a tiebreaker against Lainie Galvan (Basehor-Linwood).
1st Place Match: Despite a hard-fought battle, Ramirez secured the 2nd position after a challenging match against Madalyn Riedinger (Gardner Edgerton).

105 Weight Class – Miranda Alvarez (12-3)

Miranda Alvarez showcased her wrestling prowess in the 105 weight class, earning a 3rd place finish and contributing 17.5 team points.

Round 2: Alvarez dominated Daisy Mosso-Ramos (Lawrence) with a fall in just 1 minute and 4 seconds.
Round 3: Miley Locke (Basehor-Linwood) faced a similar fate as Alvarez secured another fall in 3 minutes and 41 seconds.
Quarterfinal: Alvarez continued her winning streak with a fall over Audry Johnson (Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail HS) in 1 minute and 54 seconds.
Semifinal: A close match ended with Connie Burns (Shawnee Heights) winning by decision over Alvarez.
3rd Place Match: Alvarez rebounded with a decisive win by decision over Brookelyn Treaster (Newton) with a score of 6-3.

110 Weight Class – Ashley Alonso (15-0)

Ashley Alonso dominated the 110 weight class, securing 1st place and contributing a remarkable 25.5 team points.

Semifinal: De La Rosa continued her dominant performance with a fall over Isabel Reyes (Shawnee Heights) in 41 seconds.

135 Weight Class – Hailey Ramos (11-3)

5th Place Match: Orozco concluded the tournament on a high note, securing 5th place with a victory by fall over Abagail Soppe (Topeka Seaman) in 26 seconds.

The Lady Demons finished as Team Champions with 173.5 points. Shawnee Heights finished second with 145.0 points. The 6A defending State Champions – Washburn Rural – finished in 4^th place with 111.0 points. The home team – Basehor-Linswood – finished in 3^rd place. The Lady Demons are now off until they host their home tournament at the United Wireless Arena on Saturday, January 6.

Lady Demon Wrestling Triumphs Over Great Bend in WAC Wrestling Dual

Great Bend, KS – Thursday

In a riveting WAC Wrestling Dual that unfolded on the mat at Great Bend High School, the defending WAC Champion Lady Demon wrestlers secured an early season victory over Great Bend with a final score of (48-30).

The action-packed dual kicked off with the 100-pound weight class, where Elizabeth Ramirez from Dodge City HS claimed a hard-fought victory over Kayle Baldwin of Great Bend HS with a final score of [6-2], setting the tone for a competitive night of wrestling.

Great Bend responded with a powerful performance at the 105-pound weight class, as Camdyn Post secured a fall over Miranda Alvarez from Dodge City HS in an impressive 1 minute and 40 seconds. The home team took an early lead at (6-3), but it would be the last lead of the night for the host Panthers.

Momentum swung back and forth as Alea Smith of Dodge City HS won by forfeit at 110 pounds, followed by Ashley Alonso from Dodge City HS quickly securing a fall at 115 pounds, putting the Lady Demons back in the lead for good. The 120-pound weight class saw Yessenia Castro from Dodge City HS earning a decisive [8-2] victory over Braelyn Turner of Great Bend HS, as the Lady Demons continued to build on their lead.

Great Bend fought back with determination earning a fall at 130, but Hailey Ramos quickly stomped out the momentum with a pin at 135.

Dodge City HS responded with a series of falls at 140, 145, and 155 pounds, with Alejandra Delarosa, Yareli Garcia, and Liliana Arroyo Alba securing crucial points for the Lady Demons. The 170-pound weight class witnessed Kirra Stevens of Great Bend HS securing a fall over Erika Sandoval. Great Bend won their final match of the evening at 190. The Lady Demons sealed the victory with a fall at 235, courtesy of Yasmin Lopez Chavez.

The Lady Demon wrestling team will finish the fall semester at the 40-team Basehor-Linwood Tournament this weekend.

Red Demon Wrestling travels to Great Bend

Red Demons fall to Great Bend in WAC Boys Wrestling Dual

Great Bend, KS – Thursday Night

In the first WAC Boys Wrestling Dual of the season, the home team emerged victorious with a final score of (50-30) over the Red Demons.

The night kicked off at the 106-pound weight class, where Finn Martinez from Dodge City put the Demons up (6-0) as Great Bend was open. Dodge City’s next win came with a pin by Raymond Hernandez at 126 pounds – knotting the dual up (12-12) after four matches.

The seesaw battle continued, with notable wins from both sides. Kaiden Hoffman of Great Bend HS secured a pin at 132 pounds, while Dylan Wainscott of Dodge City HS answered back with a fall at 138 pounds. Ramses Ruiz secured at pin at 144 and gave the Red Demons the lead after seven matches (24-18).

The tension escalated at the 165-pound weight class, where Michael Montoya of Great Bend HS triumphed over Anndy Rosales from Dodge City HS in a thrilling sudden victory round with a score of 13-11. This pivotal win extended Great Bend’s lead. The Demons would struggle past that point with the only win coming from a Jayden Amaro third period pin at 175.

Despite a valiant effort from both teams, the dual concluded with Great Bend emerging victorious in the first WAC dual for either team this season. The Red Demons are next up at the Bishop Carroll Tournament on Saturday in Wichita.
