In his first year as the Red Demons head soccer coach, Saul Hernandez has Dodge City off to a 5-1 start to the season.

Last week, the Red Demons shut out Liberal and Hays to win their first two Western Athletic Conference games. Dodge City has shut out four of their first six opponents so far this season.

“It just means that we’re doing things right (defensively),” Hernandez said. “We’re communicating well, our movement has been good. We’ve worked together as a unit which makes me happy.”

Dodge City’s toughest league test will come on Tuesday when they host Garden City. The Buffaloes also boast a 5-1 record and recently beat Liberal 1-0 and have a 2-0 record in conference play.

“I know that they have a good midfield and they have physical forwards,” Hernandez said. “We just have to expect the best from (Garden City) and expect they’re going to be on their A-game so we have to be on our A-game.”

A goal from sophomore Mario Martinez was the difference in the Dodge City boys soccer team’s conference opener against Liberal on Tuesday. With 29:36 to go in the second half, Martinez, who had the wind at his back, took a shot from outside of the box that beat Liberal’s goalkeeper. The goal would be all the Red Demons would need to take the 1-0 win.

“I got the ball and looked up to goal, I usually check the far post, and I shot and luckily it went in,” Martinez said.

It was a frustrating first half for Dodge City. There was no shortage of chances but with the wind in their face, finding the back of the net was not an easy task.

“We weren’t doing the little things right to get the shots on goal but in the second half we fixed it a little bit,” head coach Saul Hernandez said. “With the wind to our back I think we felt more confident. There were little things that we can work on and fix before the end of the season.”

Tuesday’s game was the third time the Red Demons (4-1, 1-0) have shut out a team this season.

The Dodge City boys soccer team fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 in overtime of the Titan Classic Semifinal on Thursday. Senior Leonel Lopez scored the go ahead with 19:30 to go in the game but a later equalizer from the Saints sent the game into overtime.

“I felt like we dominated the game when we played with the ball on the ground,” head coach Saul Hernandez said.

It did not take long for the Dodge City High School boys soccer team to show why they were tabbed as one of the top teams in the state coming into the 2015 season.

The Red Demons dominated the Wichita South Titans from the very start in the 7-0 victory. Junior Antonio De La Torre got the scoring started just five minutes into the game before senior Leonel Lopez made it 2-0 just 19 seconds later.

The preseason poll from the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association has been released. The Red Demon boys are ranked sixth in all classes, and fourth in class 6A. The Demons open the 2015 season against Wichita South on September 1, at Memorial Stadium.
