The Dodge City Red Demon boys soccer team took a break from their Western Athletic Conference schedule on Thursday to host one of the top teams in the 4A rankings, McPherson.

It was another dominant performance from the Red Demons as they beat the Bullpups 6-0. The season trend for Dodge City this year has been to use strong second half performances to pull away from their opposition. On Thursday, they scored five of their six goals in the first half.

“The boys wanted to make a statement from last game,” head coach Saul Hernandez said. “They showed me that they can do it. They learned from last game and I’m happy that they hit their stride in the first half.”

Junior Rafael Yeverino scored first for the Red Demons before a penalty kick from Francisco Cayetano put Dodge City up 2-0. Sophomore Mario Martinez continued to show his importance to the squad with two goals in the first half.

McPherson battled in the second half to keep it closer. With only four regular season games remaining, Hernandez is happy with the current form of his squad.

A WAC title was one of the teams’ goals this season. Sharing it was not.

“The boys wanted it tonight and we got it but they don’t want to share it with anybody,” head coach Saul Hernandez said. “The excitement is still there and that gives us a goal to look forward to towards the end of the season. It keeps the boys motivated.”

Earlier this season, Dodge City beat Hays 10-0. In the first half, the Red Demons looked like they expected that to happen again. Hernandez did not sugarcoat the first half performance. He called it maybe the worst half of soccer that his team has played this year.

“The first half I think we just came out flat-footed,” head coach Saul Hernandez said. “I think the guys thought that the game was won before it started and you can’t go out with that mentality. They picked it up in the second half and they came out playing like we usually play.”

Sophomore forward Joshua Don Juan scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to push the Red Demons lead to 4-0. Dodge City scored five goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

For the second time this season, the Dodge City Red Demons (9-1, 5-0) beat their Western Conference Athletic rival Garden City. On Thursday the Dodge City boys soccer team beat the Buffs 3-1.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore Joshua Don Juan scored to put the Red Demons up 1-0, 10-minutes into the second half. After a second Dodge City goal, Garden City got on the board after converting a penalty kick.

Junior Jose Ubanda scored the final goal for the Red Demons with 13 minutes to go in the game.

“In the first half we didn’t finish the plays that we were supposed to and didn’t score goals when we were supposed to but in the second we picked it up,” head coach Saul Hernandez said. Dodge City has been dominant so far this season in WAC play. They have outscored the other four teams 23-3 in five conference games this season.

The Red Demons have three stars on their team shirts to symbolize the three WAC titles that they have won. This year’s team is looking to add a fourth star.

“We’re going to take it one game at a time but we’re still looking to stay undefeated in the WAC,” Hernandez said.

Dodge City will play their next three games at home starting Tuesday against Hays. In the first meeting this season the Red Demons beat Hays 10-0.

Dodge City stretched their winning streak to six-games on Tuesday with a 10-0 win over Thomas More Prep. It was the second time this season that the Red Demons (8-1, 4-0) have won by 10 goals.

Sophomores Joshua Don Juan and Mario Martinez got the Red Demons off to a quick start, each having a pair of goals in the first half. Dodge City scored seven goals in the first 40-minutes.

Dodge City’s shutout streak in conference play ended on Tuesday against Garden City. Fortunately for the Red Demons boys soccer team, the winning streak did not. Dodge City beat Garden City 4-2. They are now off to start 3-0 start in Western Athletic Conference play and 6-1 overall.

It did not come easy for the Red Demons on Tuesday as Garden City (5-2, 2-1) cut the Demons lead to one goal twice in the game.

“We expected it,” Dodge City head coach Saul Hernandez said. “Every Dodge (City), Garden (City) game is going to be high emotions. There is going to be a lot on the line and the boys are going to put their bodies on the line.”

Garden City scored a quick goal to start the second half to cut the Red Demon lead to 3-2. With 20:35 left to go in the game sophomore Mario Martinez scored his second goal of the game which sealed the deal.
