After scoring an early goal, the Dodge City High School girls soccer team struggled to create many chances on Tuesday against Hays.
The Red Demons went over 80 minutes between goals but an overtime winner from Liliana Vasquez gave Dodge City the 2-1 win.
Mariyah Reyes scored her fifth goal of the season when she caught Hays’ goalkeeper Taylor Groen-Younger off of her line and chipped the ball over the senior in the fifth minute.
Hays answered with a goal of its own in the 25th minute that leveled the score.
“After that first goal Hays started out-hustling us,” Dodge City head coach Saul Hernandez said. “We took our foot off of the pedal and that’s where the momentum changed. We didn’t play as intense as we did at the start of the game.”
While the Red Demons struggled at times on Tuesday afternoon, the overtime win was one that Hernandez believes will give his team confidence going forward.
Dodge City (3-2, 2-0) also moved one game closer to its goal of winning a Western Athletic Conference championship.
“I told the girls before the game started that if we won this game it would give us a big jump in WAC play and that it would be a step closer to our goal,” Hernandez said. “I think it motivated them because last year they lost (the WAC championship) in the last two games of the season. I think the girls are really hungry to get the conference title this year.”
The Red Demons will host Hays-Thomas More Prep on Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

Dodge City scores four to beat Liberal

Starting the 2016 season off with a Western Athletic Conference opponent was not ideal for Dodge City head coach Saul Hernandez. Fortunately for the Red Demons’ conference championship hopes, his team was ready to play.
The Red Demon girls soccer team beat the Liberal Redskins 4-1 on Thursday afternoon in their season opener.
“They did their jobs,” Hernandez said. “Getting that first win, especially a WAC win, feels really good.”
It was a pair of sophomores who took care of the scoring load for Dodge City on Thursday. Mariyah Reyes and Ariana Temblador both found the back of the net twice.
Reyes scored the Red Demons’ first goal of the year when she dribbled around Liberal goalkeeper Reyna Gonzalez to put her team on the board less than four minutes into the season.
The sophomore forward notched her second goal of the day 14 minutes later when she made the most of a Liberal yellow card. Reyes capitalized on a Red Demon free kick from 21 yards out.
Temblador chipped the ball over Gonzalez with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half to give Dodge City a 3-0 lead going into the halftime break.
“I’ve been emphasizing transitioning,” Hernandez said. “Most of the goals come, not off of possession, but by stealing the ball and going to goal. So they did really well. The transitioning was excellent. We probably should’ve finished more goals in the second half but I’m happy with the four goals.”
The Red Demons will travel to Wichita on Monday for the first round of the Titan Classic at Wichita South High School. Hernandez believes that he will learn a lot about his team next week as they compete in one of the state’s toughest tournaments.
“I think (the Titan Classic) is going to help us,” Hernandez said. “Especially playing against the quality of teams that we’ll play. We’re going to see what level we’re really at and that’s when we’re going to see what adjustments we need to make.”

After losing a heartbreaker to Blue Valley Northwest in the 6A state semifinals, the Dodge City boys soccer team had one more opportunity to end the season with a win.
In Saturday’s consolation game the Red Demons beat last years state champions, Olathe East, 4-1 to earn the third place trophy. Their win on Saturday gave them a school record 19-wins and their first ever win in the state finals. In their previous two trips to state, the Demons finished in fourth place.
“It was the goal that I was looking for as a team,” head coach Saul Hernandez said. “I played more guys who weren’t able to play on Friday to get them more experience. Hopefully we make it back next year and those guys will have experience under their belt.”
After trailing 1-0, Dodge City came to life to score four goals in the final 26 minutes of the game to secure their first ever win at the state finals. It was sophomore Joshua Don Juan and senior Leo Lopez who split the four goals.
“I felt like they weren’t having fun and were just a little too uptight,” Hernandez said about the halftime adjustments. “I told them that we didn’t have anything to lose and that we needed to just play more relaxed.”
In Hernandez’s first year as the Red Demons head coach, Dodge City (19-2) had their most successful season in school history. The team’s two losses were to 5A state runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas and Blue Valley Northwest, the 6A state champion.
“It was a successful season,” Hernandez said. “We didn’t come back with the hardware that we wanted but the boys really did an excellent job handling the situations.”
In WAC competition, the Red Demons outscored their opponents 40-5 on their way to a undefeated WAC title. In 21 games this year, Dodge City outscored their opponents 94-11 and finished with 14 shutouts.
