The Gardner Edgerton Tournament is one of the toughest in the Midwest with ranked teams from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska and Iowa.  

With a young and inexperienced team Coach Tate Lowe knew the day would be about getting matches and valuable mat time.  The Demons were led by a Raymond Hernandez 6th place finish.    

At 106, Finn Martinez picked up his first victory of the season – as did Milton Ruelas at 113. 

Dillon Wainscott finished 10th, Ramses Ruiz and Gabriel Aguilera finished 8th, and Jayden Amaro went (2-2) to finish in 7th place. 

The Red Demons next compete at Lawrence Free State and Manhattan next weekend.

Dodge City, November 30, 2023

In a nail-biting showdown at the Dodge City High School Fieldhouse, the Red Demon Wrestling team emerged victorious in their season opener against the Pratt Greenbacks. The final score was indicative of the evenly matched dual that kept spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the evening.

The 106-pound weight class put the Greenbacks up early and set the tone for the night as Alex Chavez from Pratt High School claimed a quick pin.  However, the Red Demons rallied in subsequent weight classes.

Raymond Hernandez, competing in the 126-pound weight class, put the Demons on the board as Pratt was open.

The 132-pound category witnessed an impressive performance by Dylan Wainscott, who secured a fall at 2 minutes and 37 seconds, earning another six points for Dodge City – and marked the beginning of a momentum shift in favor of the Red Demons.  However, a Demon comeback was necessary as the Greenbacks led (39-18) with four matches remaining.  Ramses Ruiz began the winning streak for the Red Demons followed by pins from Alan Flores & Jayden Amaro. Mark Rayas was open – tightening the deficit to 3 points at (39-36).  In the final match Edgar Hernandez secured the fall and clinched the dual for the Demons (42-39).  The home crowd erupted into cheers, celebrating the hard-fought victory and incredible start to the season for both programs.

One of the highlight matches of the evening occurred in the 144-pound category, where Trace Mehlhorn of Pratt secured a hard-fought victory over Gabriel Aguilera of Dodge City with a decisive score of 11-5 – the only decision of the night as every other match ended with a fall.

Coach Tate Lowe expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “It was a fantastic environment to kick off the season. We have a resilient team, and I’m excited to see what the rest of the season holds.”

The Dodge City Lady Demon Wrestling team kicked off their season with an impressive performance, securing a decisive victory against the Pratt Greenbacks at the Dodge City High School Fieldhouse.

In the 100-pound weight class, Elizabeth Ramirez demonstrated her prowess securing a victory over Lexi Blasi from Pratt High School with a fall at 3 minutes and 53 seconds. Ramirez’s pin for the Lady Demons set the tone for the rest of the match.

The momentum continued with stellar performances from other Lady Demon wrestlers:

• In the 110-pound weight class, Ashley Alonso overpowered Rachel Rawlings from Pratt with a fall at 2 minutes and 24 seconds, contributing another six points to the team’s total.
• Yessenia Castro in the 115-pound weight class came away with a (10-5) decision over Morgan Prieto from Pratt, earning three team points.

The Lady Demons faced tough competition in some weight classes, with Pratt securing wins in the 120-pound and 125-pound categories. However, Dodge City’s resilience shone through as they claimed victories in the majority of the matches. The team’s dominance extended to various weight classes, including notable wins by Ariana De La Rosa, Dayanara Garcia, Yareli Garcia, Yoselyn Rubio, Maribel Castro, and Naomi Orozco.

As the final match ended, the Dodge City Lady Demon Wrestling team emerged victorious with a team score of 57 against Pratt’s 15. The resounding cheers from the home crowd echoed through the Fieldhouse, celebrating the team’s triumph and setting the stage for a promising season ahead.

Coach Tate Lowe expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “Our wrestlers came out strong tonight. We look forward to building on this success throughout the season.”
