Dodge City faces Olathe South tonight in soccer semifinal

A trip to the 6A state finals a waits the winner of tonight’s boys soccer game between Dodge City High School and Olathe South High School.
Dodge City enters the game 17-2-0 overall this season, while Olathe South brings in a record of 16-2-1.The winner between the two will play the winner of the earlier semifinal game between Manhattan High School and Overland Park-Blue Valley West.
Red Demon head coach Saul Hernandez said the Red Demons will stick to their game plan.
“We watched film on them just to kind of get and idea (what Olathe would do) so it doesn’t get us by surprise, but in the scheme of things we’re gonna stick to our game plan, ”Hernandez said. “We’re gonna do what we do best because it’s gotten us where we are now, and why change it now?”
Being one of the few remaining teams to survive into November has been a common practice for the Red Demons the last few seasons. Still, Hernandez said he still appreciates it.
“It’s been a blessing to be able to make it to final four three year in a row,” Hernandez said. “It’s always fun. It’s so competitive. The atmosphere and the environment in those games are so different, and sometimes just thinking about those games it kind of gives me the goose bumps.”
Even more, Hernandez said
it’s great to watch the players play.
“That’s what it’s all about, watching them play and compete and seeing them do what they love doing,” Hernandez said. “That’s what I enjoy the most about these games.”
And while the team’s seniors have experienced what the team is about to before, the team’s freshman haven’t. It’s something Hernandez said they’ll just have to go through to understand what it’s like.
“The environment and the atmosphere in those games; you can’t really explain to them. You kind of have to be there,” Hernandez said.
It’ll be an atmosphere that even affected even Hernandez the first time he went to a state game during his first season at Dodge City, he said.
“I was a little overwhelmed as well, and it kind of took me by surprise, ”Hernandez said. “They’re gonna see how the atmosphere is like, and that’s gonna be a factor if we return next year.”
Dodge City takes on Olathe South High School at 7p.m.tonightintheTopeka-Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, Kansas.

The Dodge City High School boys and girls cross country teams competed in the state cross country meet at the Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kansas Saturday.
The girls team finished ninth of 12, and the boys team finished 10th of 12. Ayanna Hensley continued her strong performance for the girls’ team, finishing 27th overall in a time of 20:08. Finishing 40 seconds after her was Karina Herrera, who finished 54th overall in a time of 20:48. Luz Lopez finished three seconds after her, completing the 5K course in 20:51, which was good for 57th overall.
Denise Dominguez finished 73rd overall in a time of 21:32, and Caroline
Williams finished 77th overall in a time of 21:40. Elizabeth Dorado finished 80th overall in a time of 21:55, and Lucy Lozano finished 96th overall, completing the course in 22:27.
The results came after the team had won their regional meet just a week earlier.
“We were able to finish the season by running our two best meets at the most important time,” girls head cross country coach Brian Lenz said via email. “Our ninth place finish was a great race for us.”
Saturday’s performance gives the team something to look forward to in 2018, even though one of the top performers will be graduating.
“We will be losing Luz Lopes from this year’s team,” Lenz said. “Luz gave us a dependable
runner that was calm in all situations and helped pace our younger girls in workouts and meets, we return our next nine runners which will start us into next year with high hopes.”
Javier Marquez finished 45th overall in a time of 17:01 and was the first Red Demon to complete the 5K course in the boys race. A few spots behind him was Giovanni Valverde, who finished in 17:04, which was good for 48th overall. Jesus Solis finished 51st in 17:06, and Quest Weller finished in 17:09 for 56th place.
Behind them, Israel Rojas finished 74th in 17:19, and Jair Martinez finished in 89th with a time of 17:38. Montel Love also ran, completing the course in 17:46 for a 92nd place finish.

Red Demon season ends with loss to Derby

The Dodge City Red Demons fell to the Derby Panthers Friday night by a score of 49-13.
The loss came in the first round of the 6A state playoffs, ending the season for the Red Demons.
Overall, the team ended the season 3-6.
The Red Demons had their chances.Senior quarterback Dawson Williams broke away for a 96-yard touchdown after the Panthers took a 14-0 lead in the first half. That made the score 14-6 after the extra-point was blocked. He also scored ona74-yard run later in the game.
Both were big plays for the Red Demons in a game with many big plays for both teams. The vast majority of those plays, however, were made by Derby, who relied on running back Brody Kooser and junior quarterback Hunter Igo.
Both had multiple touchdowns, but it wasn’t always easy for them. Particularly early, the Red Demons defense pressured regularly and sacked him often. Still, it wasn’t enough as Igo and the Panther offense wore-down the Red Demon defense.
With the season now over, the Red Demons will look to next season, where a number of the team’s starters return as seniors, such as Evan Darville and Marcos Fisher. Offensively, Carlos Gamboa will be a senior, as will Tade Pike, who played a number of positions this season. Jaiel Johnson also will be a senior.
The sophomore class looks similarly potent, with standouts Dejon Delgado, John Johnson, Joshua Harshberger and BeauFoster all having gotten significant starting time as sophomores this year.
