Sunflower Bank named official corporate partner of the Backyard Battle Rivalry Series

The Dodge City and Liberal High School Athletic Departments are pleased to announce that Sunflower Bank has chosen to partner with both schools for naming rights to the Backyard Battle Rivalry Series.

Dodge City and Liberal have been competing on the football field since 1919. In 1921, the rivalry moved to the basketball court. Fast forward to the 2023-24 school year – the rivalry includes multiple match-ups across 20 sports each year! Over the course of the past 100 years the rivalry has grown not only in intensity but also in the number of events hosted by the two communities. 

The rivalry series will begin this winter as Dodge City High School and Liberal High School will compete for a trophy that will be presented each time the two schools compete in the following: Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys & Girls Wrestling. The series hopes to expand to several more potential events over the course of the spring and fall seasons.  

Sunflower Bank has been able to build longstanding relationships with these schools and communities through our ABC program and other efforts. We are both honored and excited for the opportunity to support these two amazing cities and school districts in this 104-year-old competition.”

Red Demons Tame the Tigers

Dodge City remains unbeaten at Fieldhouse

Dodge City, KS – In the final non-conference game of 2023, the Red Demons came away with a resounding victory over the Ulysses Tigers with a final score of 58-31.

The Red Demons took an early lead, thanks to a series of impressive plays, including a three-pointer from Anthony Perez, assisted by Ty Scheck.

As the first quarter progressed, the Red Demons maintained their defensive intensity, causing turnovers and converting them into points. Grayden Gamblin played a crucial role with steals and offensive rebounds, contributing to the early lead. The quarter ended with the Red Demons leading 10-6.

The second period saw the Red Demons extending their lead with strong defensive plays and efficient scoring. Bryson Unzueta and Jaiden Springer showcased their offensive capabilities, leading to a halftime score of 20-7 in favor of the Red Demons.

The third period witnessed an even more dominant performance by the Red Demons. Scheck, Tochi Okoro, and Perez led the scoring charge, while the team’s defense continued to stifle the Tigers. The period ended with the Red Demons holding a commanding 40-16 lead.

In the final period, the Red Demons maintained their dominance, with Springer and Okoro leading the offensive charge. The game concluded with a final score of 58-31, marking a convincing victory for the Red Demons.

Key statistics from the game highlight the Red Demons’ well-rounded performance, including efficient field goal shooting (64.3%) and solid defensive plays leading to (16) Ulysses turnovers. Anthony Perez and Tochi Okoro led the team in scoring with (12) apiece, while Jaiden Springer finished with (11) points.

The Red Demons now head into Christmas Break at (2-4) and next face Garden Plain on January 3rd at the Fieldhouse.

Lady Demons win big over Ulysses

Tuesday night was a Spirit Sock Giveaway for Dodge City fans. And not only were the socks a hit – the Lady Demons put on a show lighting up the scoreboard for a 53-16 win over visiting Ulysses.

The Lady Demons found their shooting touch on Tuesday night and it propels them into the Christmas break with good vibes after a tough shooting streak against Wichita Northwest last Saturday.

Ashlyn Lembright kick-started the game for the Lady Demons hitting back to back three-pointers in the first quarter. The Tigers responded to keep things close early, but Emily Gutierrez nailed a three-pointer, highlighting a barrage of points as the Lady Demons hit 6 of their first 7 shots from behind the arc.

The first quarter concluded with Lady Demons holding a significant lead of 16-7.

As the game progressed into the second quarter, the Lady Demons continued to dominate. Lembright and Easha Potts showcased their scoring abilities, extending the lead with well-timed three-pointers and layups. The Tigers struggled to break through the Lady Demons’ defense, facing turnovers and challenges in scoring.

By halftime, Lady Demons had built a substantial lead of 33-14. The Lady Demons finished the half with a field goal percentage of 63.6%.

The third quarter witnessed Lady Demons further asserting their dominance. Potts led the team hitting her free throws and adding some high percentage layups, while the defense continued to stifle the Tigers’ offensive attempts. The Lady Demons’ lead expanded to an impressive 48-14 by the end of the quarter.

In the final quarter, the Lady Demons showcased their depth as the bench players contributed significantly to the final score.

The Lady Demons’ head into the break at (2-4) and will not return to action until January 3rd at home against Garden Plain. Potts finished the game with a team-high 19 points, while Freshman Emily Gutierrez set a career high with 16 points.

Dodge City Lady Demon Wrestling Team Dominates 6th Annual Ladycat Classic

On the final weekend before the Christmas Break, the Dodge City Lady Demon Wrestling Team emerged victorious at the 6th Annual Ladycat Classic.  The Lady Demons not only showcased their top of podium strength, but overall competitive team depth heading into the second half of the season. 

100 Weight Class – Elizabeth Ramirez (12-2)

Elizabeth Ramirez delivered an outstanding performance in the 100 weight class, claiming the 2nd place spot and contributing 20.5 crucial team points.

  • Round 1: Elizabeth Ramirez defeated Peyton Hennes (Newton) with a decisive fall in just 1 minute and 19 seconds.
  • Round 2: A swift victory followed as Ramirez secured a fall over Aubrey Montemeyor (Kapaun Mt. Carmel) in 32 seconds.
  • Round 3: Ramirez continued her winning streak, pinning Ellie Ayres (Topeka Seaman) in 1 minute and 29 seconds.
  • Championship Bracket: The intensity rose as Ramirez clinched victory in a tiebreaker against Lainie Galvan (Basehor-Linwood).
  • 1st Place Match: Despite a hard-fought battle, Ramirez secured the 2nd position after a challenging match against Madalyn Riedinger (Gardner Edgerton).

105 Weight Class – Miranda Alvarez (12-3)

Miranda Alvarez showcased her wrestling prowess in the 105 weight class, earning a 3rd place finish and contributing 17.5 team points.

  • Round 2: Alvarez dominated Daisy Mosso-Ramos (Lawrence) with a fall in just 1 minute and 4 seconds.
  • Round 3: Miley Locke (Basehor-Linwood) faced a similar fate as Alvarez secured another fall in 3 minutes and 41 seconds.
  • Quarterfinal: Alvarez continued her winning streak with a fall over Audry Johnson (Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail HS) in 1 minute and 54 seconds.
  • Semifinal: A close match ended with Connie Burns (Shawnee Heights) winning by decision over Alvarez.
  • 3rd Place Match: Alvarez rebounded with a decisive win by decision over Brookelyn Treaster (Newton) with a score of 6-3.

110 Weight Class – Ashley Alonso (15-0)

  • 1st Place Match: The championship eluded De La Rosa as Koti Best (Topeka Seaman) secured a fall in 1 minute and 26 seconds.

135 Weight Class – Hailey Ramos (11-3)

Hailey Ramos finished in 4th place facing tough competition at the 135 class.

  • Round 3: Continuing her impressive run, Ramos secured another win by fall, this time over Hannah Brown (Pittsburgh), in 3 minutes and 21 seconds.
  • Quarterfinal: In a closely contested bout, Ramos triumphed over Maci Pearson (Olathe West) with a decision victory, earning a 5-3 score.
  • Semifinal: Ramos dropped a tough match from Espie Almazan (Lewis Central), who won by fall in 3 minutes and 39 seconds.
  • 3rd Place Match: Ramos engaged in a thrilling contest with Virginia Munoz (Emporia) in the 3rd place match. Munoz secured victory in sudden victory – 1 with a score of 3-1, and Ramos claimed 4th place.

140 Weight Class – Alejandra Delarosa (5-3)

Alejandra Delarosa wins final match to finish in 13th place.

  • Consolation Bracket: Orozco bounced back in the consolation bracket with a victory by fall over Gianna Redcorn (Kapaun Mt. Carmel) in 2 minutes and 46 seconds.
  • 5th Place Match: Orozco concluded the tournament on a high note, securing 5th place with a victory by fall over Abagail Soppe (Topeka Seaman) in 26 seconds.

The Lady Demons finished as Team Champions with 173.5 points.  Shawnee Heights finished second with 145.0 points.  The 6A defending State Champions – Washburn Rural – finished in 4th place with 111.0 points.  The home team – Basehor-Linswood – finished in 3rd place.  The Lady Demons are now off until they host their home tournament at the United Wireless Arena on Saturday, January 6.
