Pilldilly turns 90!
Kansas Barnstorming Tour to feature DCHS mascot created in 1932.
On Saturday afternoon at the Dodge City Civic Center – members of this year’s KU National Championship Basketball Team will be wearing shirts unique to the history of Dodge City High School. The shirts will feature a Jayhawk looking bird called a “Pilldilly” – a mascot born out of what has become a century long discussion regarding the mascot for the high school athletic programs in Dodge City. The Pilldilly will be making an appearance this weekend ninety years after it first appeared on the front of the new jerseys of the 1932 Dodge City Senior High School basketball team.
What the heck is a Pilldilly? Even the most dedicated Dodge City High School fan would have a difficult time answering that question. A quick history lesson is required for the complete answer.
In 1927, a newspaper writer for the Dodge City Globe mistakenly began referring to the school’s teams as the “Demons” due to the nickname of “D-Men” for the letter-jackets worn by the Dodge men’s varsity teams. The name stuck until 1932 when the controversial mascot was replaced by the Pilldilly – a Jayhawk looking bird made up of the letters D-C-H-S (see below). However, in 1940 the Demon returned and became the official mascot of Dodge City Senior High School.
Players will wear the Pilldilly shirts on Saturday – with the Pilldilly on the front & their name & number on the back. Player shirts will be available for auction at the end of the event. Replica Pilldilly shirts will be available at the event, as well.
“To incorporate our own basketball history into this current historical run by Kansas Basketball will make this a very memorable event for our city. The Pilldilly is a quirky piece of Red Demon lore and I think fans will enjoy the design and the story behind the apparel.” – Jay Gifford, DCHS Athletic Director

Red Demons Look to Stay Hot Against the Redskins
The Dodge City Red Demons (9-0, #4 in 6A) will travel to Liberal (2-5) on Friday night for the program’s first Western Athletic Conference game of the season and final tune-up before next week’s 79th Annual Tournament of Champions.
Dodge City has been playing outstanding basketball thus far this season, but Head Coach Shane Traughber knows that conference competition is always at another level. “I’m very proud of how we have started, but also pleased that the boys are continuing to come to practice each day ready to work and improve. We know we’ll get everyone’s best shot and must play well to keep this momentum going. We are looking forward to starting this next chapter of this season facing Liberal to open WAC play in a tough environment against a team hungry for a conference win. I hope the challenge helps raise our game to another level, as well.”
The Red Demons have faced more quality individuals than teams this season, but much of that can be attributed to the stout defense they have been playing up to this point. Offensively, the Red Demons have spread out the scoring with Cooper Scheck leading the team with 18.2 ppg, while Aidan Sowers is averaging 13.1 ppg and Dawson Taylor with 10.7 ppg. As with the girls program, seniors are doing most of the heavy lifting for the Red Demons.
Tip-Off for Friday night’s game will be at 7:30p at Liberal High School. The games will be broadcast live by Sean Boston at 98.1FM and live streamed at dchssports.com. Reminder, tickets for the 79th Annual TOC are currently on sale at the UWA Box Office. The Red Demons will be facing Wichita East at 7pm in the first-round of games that begin Thursday afternoon at the United Wireless Arena.
