The DCHS Athletic Department welcomes Red Demon Basketball fans to the 2018-19 season. This year’s home schedule includes (10) Varsity home games– featuring some of the top teams in the state of Kansas.
Red Demons Travel to Derby
The Dodge City High School Red Demons will travel to Derby on Friday night to take on the number one-ranked Derby Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm at Panther Stadium.
- Friday night will be the ninth time these teams have met on the football field, with all nine games being played in the post-season.
- The Red Demons faced the Panthers for the first time in 1982, with the Panthers triumphing, 32-26, in double overtime.
- The Red Demons and Panthers played in the playoffs for three consecutive years from 1992-1994. The loss in 1994 was the lone loss for the Demons on the season.
- The most one-sided Demon victory in the series was a (44-22) win in 1987.
Demons Stop Junction City
The Dodge City Red Demons season continues after the Red Demons beat the Junction City Bluejays Friday night in first round of the 6A State Playoffs by a score of 25-15.
It was the fourth-straight win for the Red Demons.
In the first half, Dodge City controlled the game.
On one hand, the Red Demons ran well, largely with hands of senior Jaiel Johnson gashed the Bluejays. Junior quarterback Beau Foster was a force.
Up 3-0, Foster threw a 15-yard pass to junior De Jon Delgado, after which an extra point gave the Red Demons a 10-0 lead.
Junction City ran the ball in on an ensuing drive, cutting the lead to 10-7, but Foster again cut into the Bluejays, running the ball in past the right-side pylon to give the Red Demons a 16-7 lead.
The Red Demons tacked on field goal before the end of the half to take a 19-7 lead into halftime.
Perhaps the biggest difference between the two teams in the first half was the turnovers. The Bluejays lost multiple fumbles in the first, while the Red Demons maintained a clean sheet, committing none.
In the second half, the Bluejays carved their way down the field to cut the Dodge City lead to 19-15 after a two-point conversion.
Dodge City, however, was far from done. After being forced to punt, Dodge City junior Cedric Rosales came up with a huge interception, giving the Red Demons the ball back at the 40 yard line. A few plays later, and after a long pass to sophomore Matt Friess Jr., junior John Johnson ran the ball in around the left, extending the Red Demons’ lead to 25-15 after a missed extra point.
Demons Advance Toward State
The Dodge City Red Demons survived and advanced Thursday night, coming from down 1-0 to beat the Haysville-Campus Colts 2-1, winning the Regional Championship.
Sophomore defenseman Erubiel Duron and sophomore forward Alan Lopez had the Red Demon goals in the win.
In the first half, the Red Demons had the majority of the chances, but with 9:10 left in the half, the Colts capitalized on one of their opportunities, scoring on a free kick to take a 1-0 lead which they took into halftime.
In the second half, the Red Demons continued to control possession through the first 20 minutes of play, but were still unable to score.
Down 1-0, Red Demon coach Saul Hernandez made three substitutions with 18:20 left in regulation, and a couple minutes later the move worked.
“I felt at that point we needed a spark,” Hernandez said. “The front three forwards looked tired, and I know the next three [are] gonna give it their all, and I saw their defense tired, and we just needed someone to keep on pounding and put it in.”
One of the players Hernandez sent in at the time was Duron.
“He just told me ‘we need someone to step up and go in. Just give it your all.’” Duron said. ”[There was] a good corner, good reflection by Erik (Martinez), I was just there luckily to score it in.”
There was great energy, Duron said, and everyone on the team was a part of the come-from-behind win.
Demons Host Blue Jays in Playoffs
The Dodge City High School “Red Demons” will host the Junction City “Blue Jays” this Friday night in a first round match up of the 6A KSHSAA playoffs—West Regional.
- Dodge City (5-3) is the #8 seed in the 6A West Regional.
- Junction City (4-4) is the #9 seed in the 6A West Regional.
- The winner of Friday Night’s contest will most likely play #1 seed, Derby.
- Friday night will be the first time these teams have met since 1997.
- This is the ninth meeting overall between the two teams. Junction leads the series (6-2).
- This is the fourth playoff meeting between the two teams. Dodge City’s only playoff win in the series came in 1994 (DC 55 JC 22).
Ticket Information
Ticket prices for this Friday Night’s game vs Junction City will be: $6 Adults, $4 Students. The first (200) DCHS Students get in FREE with their student id. No other passes will be accepted – other than KSHSAA and Media passes. Reserved parking passes are still good for Friday night.
Season ticket holders will be given first preference for reserved seating for Friday Night’s KSHSAA bracket game. Season ticket holders may come into the Athletic Office any time from 8a-4p (Tuesday thru Thursday) to pick up their reserved seat tickets. Cost is $6 per seat. These seats MUST be purchased in advance of Friday – as any unclaimed tickets will be sold on Friday at DCHS.
ALL remaining chair back reserve seats will be available for purchase on Friday from (8a-4p) in the Athletic Office. Cost is $6 per seat. Only GA tickets will be available at the gates on Friday night.
