Red Demons 13 Buffaloes 3 – WAC Baseball
Garden City – The Dodge City Red Demon baseball team roster includes seven seniors. And while they each bring something different to the plate for Head Coach Zach Shipley – they all have one thing in common – they have never lost a high school varsity game to rival Garden City. “This group of seniors has found a way to beat Garden City in almost every way. Not all of them played varsity as Freshman, but a couple have played in all nine games. It is something that will bring a smile to their face when they look back on their time at DCHS.”, said Shipley.
On a perfect day for baseball, the Red Demons jumped on the Buffaloes early – sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning. Remmington Miller (hitting .386 for the season) led off the game with a single up the middle against Garden City starter Evan Finch. Sophomore Ty Scheck reached on an infield single before Arec Mendoza (hitting .404 for the season) singled in Miller for the first run of the game. Kaden Webb (hitting .333 on the season) singled in Xavier Fernandez with two outs to keep the first inning ambush going. A Mars Ruiz double to the fence pushed the lead to four. Ruiz would eventually score on a passed ball with Layton Blatnick at the plate to cap off a 5-run first inning.
The top of the third resembled the top of the first for the Demons – with a couple of walks sprinkled in to from the Buffalo pitching staff. Webb led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Ruiz and a run scoring fielder’s choice by sophomore Elijah Weber. Blatnick singled to keep the line moving and was joined in the hit parade by Scheck (single) and Mendoza (double). Webb doubled for his second hit of the inning to push the lead to 12-1. The Buffaloes would never recover – plating a single run in the first inning and two more runs in the bottom of the third after the Demons had tacked on the seven spot in the top of the third inning.
Remmington Miller started on the mound for the Demons, but gave way to Mars Ruiz in the third inning. Ruiz pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win for the Demons.
Dodge City has not lost to Garden City in baseball since 2019. Next up for the Red Demons (6-10, 2-2) is another WAC matchup on Friday at Demon Field against Great Bend. First pitch of the double header is slated for 4pm.

The five members schools of the Western Athletic Conference have voted to implement a 35-second shot clock for the 2024-25 basketball season. The KSHSAA recently announced that schools would be given the option to adopt this new rule for a trial basis for next season. Leagues from all over Kansas have been discussing this rule change for several years and have until the fall to make a final decision.
However, the WAC administrators moved quickly for approval to allow for purchase of new equipment, acclimation during the summer months for their programs, and the need to communicate the rule
change with other schools that will be competing against WAC schools – including tournaments.
According to the KSHSAA website, “member high schools in all classifications have the option to utilize the shot clock for all home boys’ and girls’ basketball games at the varsity level. If a school chooses to use the shot clock, they will do so for all regular season varsity games. This includes any regular season varsity tournament games hosted by the school. If schools opt into the trial, the shot clock must be used by both girls’ and boys’ varsity teams. The shot clock will not be utilized in any classification for any round of the 2024-2025 post-season.”
The newest facilities in the WAC (Garden City & Hays) are already, or will be, equipped with shot-clocks and LED-lit score boards. The remaining schools will have to purchase shot-clocks for at least their main gyms. For schools hosting varsity tournaments, all facilities must have shot clocks installed. According to the current WAC President, Jay Gifford of Dodge City, the decision was not too difficult for the schools as there seemed to be no hesitation from any of the head coaches in the conference. Gifford also cited the amount of research and observation that has occurred to give the schools confidence in the fact that this rule change has the ability to improve the quality of games and align Kansas with several states that have already made the change.
Following the 2024-25 season, the KSHSAA Executive Board will consider future adoption of the shot clock for regular and postseason basketball games.
