Dodge City defeats Junction City 10-0 in regional opener

So far this season, the Dodge City Red Demons boys soccer team has achieved every goal that they have set to this point. On Tuesday, they started their quest for their final goal with a 10-0 win over Junction City to start postseason play. The Red Demons jumped on the Blue Jays with a quick goal after just a minute and 15 seconds from sophomore Mario Martinez. Fellow sophomore Joshua Don Juan added another goal five minutes later.

“We don’t want to give any team a chance,” head coach Saul Hernandez said. “We need to start (scoring) from the beginning and the boys did that. There’s nothing else I could have asked from them today. We scored in the first minute and a half and some teams won’t be able to bounce back from that.”

Martinez and Don Juan both finished with a hat trick. Sophomore Alejandro Rojas and senior Johnny Ortiz each added a goal for the Red Demons as well. Junior Jose Ubanda scored the final two goals to end the game early for Dodge City.

Dodge City (16-1) will host Wichita Northwest (10-7) on Thursday for the regional title. The Red Demons have won their last 14 games and cannot afford to let that streak end if they hope to compete for a state championship. Hernandez has noticed that the intensity has ramped up amongst his players now that postseason play has begun.

“Before I would have to get them focused on get on them but now they do that themselves,” Hernandez said. “It shows me that they’ve switched on their game face.”

The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

Dodge City cross country teams win regional titles

The Dodge City cross country teams swept both the boys and girls regional titles over the weekend in Wichita. Two weeks ago, the Red Demons captured the boys and girls WAC title.

BCC - Regionals - 2015 - 2 The boys team were led by junior Marcelo Cruz who took second place. Dodge City’s boys had three runners finish in the top-10 and five finish in the top-15. It was one of the Red Demons strongest team performances of the season as they set a new team-high average of 16:40.

The girls squad had their plan going into regionals and were able to execute it. Just like the boys team, the girls had three runners place in the top-10 and five in the top-15. Coral Neave and Amelia Richter finished in fifth and sixth-place.

GCC - Regionals - 2015 -2 “We had talked going into the race and knew that if we could get one in the top five, two more in the top 10 and our fourth and fifth runners in the top 15 we would have a chance to win,” girls head coach Brian Lenz said. “The girls went out and took care of running the race as planned.

There is just one more meet left for both teams and that will take place this Saturday in Lawrence at Rim Rock Farm when the two squads compete for the 6A state title.

Demons fall on the road to Hutchinson

The Dodge City Red Demons suffered their toughest loss of the season on Friday, falling to Hutchinson 72-34.

The Red Demons were first on the board with a touchdown run from senior quarterback Caden Walters. After the 7-0 lead, the Salthawks responded with a touchdown and then an onside kick that they recovered. The kick resulted in three points for Hutchinson.

The Salthawks outscored Dodge City 41-7 to close out the first half. Walters found senior wide receiver Dayton McGroarty twice in the end zone in the second half. Senior receiver Eric Reid was also on the receiving end of a touchdown pass in the second half for Dodge City.

A playoff spot does not look like it will be in the cards for Dodge City (4-4, 3-0) after dropping their first two district games. However, the Red Demons will head to Garden City for the hatchet game where the WAC title will also be on the line next Friday.

Demons go perfect in WAC

The Dodge City boys soccer team finished off their regular season on Thursday with a 3-0 win at Liberal. The result gave the Red Demons a perfect 8-0 record in WAC play this season.

In his first season as the Red Demons head coach, Saul Hernandez, led his team to a school-record 15 regular season wins. The only blemish on record this season was a 3-2 overtime loss to St. Thomas Aquinas earlier this season.

With a conference title secured, Dodge City’s quest for a regional title will begin next Tuesday when they host Junction City at 6 p.m. The 15-1 Red Demons have secured home field advantage throughout regional play. They enter regional play riding a 13-game winning streak.

Demons look for district win at Hutch

Despite falling to Wichita Northwest last Friday, with two games remaining, a playoff spot is still in reach for Dodge City.

On Friday, the Red Demons (4-3, 3-0) will travel to Hutchinson for the second game in district play. The 5-2 Salthawks are also looking to rebound after a 14-2 loss last week to Garden City. Friday’s matchup will show a contrast of offensive styles when the Red Demons air raid offense will look to counter Hutchinson’s hardnosed, run-heavy attack.

“They’re big,” Dodge City head coach Dave Foster said. “They are going to put a lot more people in the box. When they do throw the football it is usually someone wide open because you’ve had to involve so many more people (to stop the run). The challenge is a week ago we faced the spread and we played a lot of man (coverage).”

On top of facing two teams with a combined record of 12-2 in their final two district games, the Red Demons will also have to play both teams on the road. After dropping their first two road games of the season, Dodge City bounced back with a 51-7 win over Great Bend in their last road test.

Foster said only time will tell if playing their final two games on the road will have much of an impact.

“I don’t know if it’s much of a factor,” Foster said. “We love playing at home but we don’t mind going on the road. It’s not like bus trips bother us. We didn’t play very well when we went to West and Heights but it was early in the season. We played extremely well at Great Bend. If we get a repeat effort like that then maybe things are positive for us.”

Turnovers played a big major part in both Dodge City and Hutchinson’s first game of district play last week. The Red Demons turned the ball over four times against Wichita Northwest last Friday.

“Our four turnovers in that game resulted in 28 points on the ensuing possession for the opponent,” Foster said. “We have to learn from that. Those are preventable errors.”

Hutchinson turned the ball over on downs three times against Garden City.

The Salthawks won last year’s meeting 48-28.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson.
