Nine Red Demons pen with colleges

Dodge City High School had nine student-athletes sign national letters of intent on Wednesday to continue their academic and athletic careers. Five of the nine Red Demons penned with four-year universities.

Highlighting the group was Jessica Harshberger who will have the opportunity to play NCAA Division I basketball at Southeast Missouri State University. Harshberger was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a junior and senior as she led Dodge City to two straight WAC titles.

Three of Harshberger’s former teammates will also be playing basketball at the college level. Brianna Bradshaw signed with Hutchinson Community College, last season’s Jayhawk Conference champions. Baily Shelor, along with Taylor Nichols, will remain in Dodge City and attend Dodge City Community College.

Earlier this month, Dodge City hired Zach Loll as its new women’s head basketball coach. While Shelor and Nichols were heavily recruited by former head coach Mark James, returning assistant coach Sta’Nisha Garlington emphasized the importance of the two local signees.

“It was crucial for us to make sure with a new coach that they still felt like they were still signing with the same program,” Garlington said. “I’m still here,our returners are still here and we still wanted them here.”

Four members of the Dodge City track and field team signed with four year schools. Tyler Trent, who placed sixth in the boys long jump at the 6A state tournament last season, signed with Fort Hays State University.

Brekk Flax signed with the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Flax has two first place finishes in the girls 100 meter and 200 meter dash in both of the Red Demons’ track and field meets so far this season.

Jasmine Duarte and Mariela Aldaba will also continue running in college. Last fall, the pair of seniors helped Dodge City’s cross country team to a seventh place finish at the 6A state cross country meet. Duarte signed with Washburn University in Topeka while Aldaba will attend Newman University.

During his senior season, Dayton McGroarty led the Dodge City boys basketball team to its first 6A state tournament appearance since 2012 and earned First-Team All-WAC honors. McGroarty will join the mens basketball team at Dodge City Community College next season.

BASEBALL

The Red Demons split a doubleheader with Thomas More Prep-Marian on Monday.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Dodge City scored four runs on itswaytoa6-1win.Senior Bryce Unruh pitched all seven innings for the Red Demons in game one.

In game two, Dodge City had an opportunity to get back in the game. Trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning, they could not capitalize with bases loaded. The Red Demons dropped the second game of the afternoon 11-3.

Dodge City (3-3, 0-2) will host Wichita Southeast on Friday.

TRACK & FIELD

The Dodge City girls took first place while the Red Demon boys earned second at the Liberal Invitational on Friday.

Senior Brekk Flax finished ahead of the pack in the girls 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Fellow senior Jessica Harshberger earned three individual first place medals. The two seniors also earned first place medals as part of relay teams.

The girls team scored 178 team points.

The Red Demon boys scored 106 points on the way to a second place finish.

Senior Tyler Trent took home a first place medal in the boys long jump for the second meet in a row. The 4x800meterteamofMarcelo Cruz, Felix Marquez, Ignacio Calderon and Jason Luft also earned took first place for the second time this season.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Red Demon girls (4-3, 3-0) continued their strong start to Western Athletic Conference play onMondaywitha5-0win at Great Bend.

Sophomore Mariyah Reyes scored three goals for Dodge City. In their first three games of WAC play, the Red Demons have outscored their conference opposition 11-2.

Dodge City will travel to Wichita South on Friday.

State champions

DCHS archery team wins second consecutive state title

For the second consecutive season, Dodge City High School has shown that they have the best collection of archers in the state. Over the weekend, the Red Demons were named state champions after scoring 3,166 team points to beat out Pittsburg High School who earned 3,102 points.

“This was a great accomplishment for this group of students to win the state title for the second year in a row,” head coach Dave Foster said. “We have a great group of students that make up our team including athletes from almost every spring sport as well as students that are not involved in any other activity so it is awesome to bring the best archers in our school together to accomplish a feat like this together.”

Junior Justin Ostrom earned the title of the state’s top archer by collecting 287 of 300 possible points. Not far behind Ostrom was fellow junior Brett Groth won tallied 285 points.

Justin Schowengerdt was the third Red Demon on the boy’s side to finish in the top five amongst the field of 160 archers.

On the girls side, senior Kassi Blankman took second place with a score of 270 points in the field of 195 archers. Sophomore Sydney Foster and Reva Swaney each finished in the top 20 individually.

The first place finish earned the Red Demons a trip to the national tournament in Lexington, Kentucky.
