Red Demons vs. Wichita Southeast

The Dodge City High School football program will continue its City League run this Friday night as the “Red Demons” host the Wichita Southeast “Buffaloes” at Memorial Stadium. Both the Red Demons and Buffaloes will be looking for their first win of the season. Dodge City fell to Wichita West (48-41); while Southeast dropped their opener to Wichita Heights – Dodge City’s week three opponent.

Series History

The Red Demons have faced the Golden Buffaloes sixteen times in the storied history of both programs. The Red Demons first played the Buffaloes in 1963 with the Buffs winning the inaugural contest by a score of 28-13. Five of the contests have come in the KSHSAA Playoffs with Dodge City winning four of the five playoff games. The overall series record has Dodge City with a (12-4) advantage. A six-game winning streak in the series by the Demons was halted by Southeast in 2008. However, the Demons have now won the last six.

Game Night

On Friday night, Dodge City High School will be inducting three Air Force Generals into the Alumni Association Ring of Honor. A special pre-game ceremony is planned, along with the halftime induction ceremony. The largest USA flag in Kansas will be showcased during the pre-game ceremony, along with a special musical performance in honor of Patriot Day.

Volleyball Wins Two of Three

In their second quad in three days, the Dodge City Red Demons went 2-1 on Thursday with an early win over Lakin and finished the night in thrilling fashion against Sublette. After falling behind 1-0 in the final match of the evening, Dodge City won the last two games to beat Sublette with the final game coming down to a close 26-24 finish.

“It was great for them to be able to get that,” head coach Krystle Gaswick said about the late win. “That was the definition of grit. Things were not going our way but we gritted it out anyway, played with a lot of heart and got the win.”

The Red Demons lone loss was against Western Athletic Conference opponent Hays, 2-0. After a quick 25-10 loss in the first game, Dodge City came out strong in the second game to take an early 8-3 lead. The Indians would pull away once both teams hit double-digits, winning 25-20.

Boys Soccer Falls to Aquinas

The Dodge City boys soccer team fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 in overtime of the Titan Classic Semifinal on Thursday. Senior Leonel Lopez scored the go ahead with 19:30 to go in the game but a later equalizer from the Saints sent the game into overtime.

“I felt like we dominated the game when we played with the ball on the ground,” head coach Saul Hernandez said.

Girls Golf Finished Fifth at Mariah Hills

The Dodge City girls golf team took fifth place out of 12 teams at the Dodge City Invitational on Thursday. Logan Gleason paced the Red Demons with a score of 98.

“I thought it was a pretty solid effort by all,” head coach Jim Mapel said. “Mariah Hills is a tough course. Moving around the course, the girls kept it in play. We had four really good scores.”

Demons Set to Host Southeast

The season did start the way that the Red Demon football hoped it would. Dodge City High School fell to Wichita West 48-41 on Friday and will host Wichita Southeast in the home opener this Friday.

The Red Demons did some things well on Friday but one thing that head coach Dave Foster has noticed is that his team still lacks an identity. Foster has been pleased with what he has seen from his team since Friday’s loss but now he would like to see his upperclassmen step up.

“We’re definitely challenging our upperclassmen in terms of leadership and in terms of how we work in practice,” Foster said. “I think the thought of complacency has now left. We were worried about that (during) several bad practices in the preseason phase. Hopefully it’s important enough to this group of kids with leadership roles that they turn things up and get us to the next level.”

Senior quarterback Caden Walters threw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns while senior running back Tyler Trent eclipsed the 100-yard mark on Friday. While the offense was able to find the end zone, Foster mentioned how there were some improvements that need to be made on the offensive side of the ball, starting with turnovers.
