It was Dodge City Red Demons versus the Garden City Buffaloes versus the weather Friday in the teams’ traditional rivalry Hatchet Game.

Lightning delayed the start of the game by an hour and 20 minutes, and when play started, the teams had to deal with a 40 mph wind that sometimes had gusts of 56 mph.

Scoring was hard to come by, but in the end, the Demons took home a 17-7 victory over the Buffaloes.

The Demons got the scoring started by forcing a Buffalo turnover and got a field goal with 8:33 in the first quarter.

After that, the teams continued to battle each other and the persistent wind, with neither team getting on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter.

Garden City scored its only points on a touchdown carry by Josh Janas, who had 42 carries for 186 yards.

“It (the Buffalo touchdown) was significant. They had just scored and we had to (score) into the wind,” coach Dave Foster said.

The Dodge City High School football program will travel to compete against the Garden City Buffaloes on Friday night in the 82nd Annual Hatchet Game.

• Friday night will mark the 121st time these teams have met in this storied rivalry.
• The Demons and Buffaloes have played every year since 1907, the second longest rivalry in Kansas.
• The first game between these two teams occurred in 1903, a 34-0 Dodge City win.
• The two teams played a rematch the following week on Thanksgiving Day which ended in a 0-0 tie. Garden City hosted a post-game dance and meal, and both teams attended. For both games, the host team provided the transportation for the visiting team to travel.
• In 1938, the series was livened by the addition of the hatchet. Dodge City leads in Hatchet game victories 50-30-1.

The Dodge City Red Demons got busy in a hurry against Hays on Friday night.

On the first play from scrimmage after the opening kickoff, Beau Foster intercepted a pass and returned it to the 45-yard line. It took the Demons just four plays for Foster to run in for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead with just 1:16 gone in the first quarter.

The Demons offense and defense went to work and took a 40-21 victory over the Hays Indians.

The Demons were just getting started in the first quarter and scored another touchdown with 7:56 left in the first.

Hays answered with a touchdown of their own at 4:19 but the Demons came back just 39 seconds later with another touchdown for a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter after a missed PAT.

In the second quarter, both team defenses stiffened and neither was able to get into the end zone for a 20-7 score at half.

Dodge City High School has finalized the Varsity Football schedule for the new two-year cycle. Entering the 118th season for Red Demon Football, the non-conference portion of the schedule features some new teams for the Red Demons. Bishop Carroll will face the Demons for the first time since 1977 (a 15-14 Eagle victory in the KSHSAA playoffs) and for the first time in the regular season. All three games between the teams have been played in the playoffs, including a 1970 win by the Demons on their way to the State 4A Championship. The Red Demons did play Wichita Catholic in the regular undefeated season of 1945. The Red Demons will play their entire non-conference schedule against Wichita city league foes, including Wichita West for the seventh consecutive season to open the 2020 home campaign.

The conference schedule will feature Garden City at home in 2020 for the 83rd annual Hatchet Game. The DCHS Alumni Association will continue to host the Ring of Honor Ceremony at the first home game of each year, with Homecoming to be set at a later date.

The Red Demon Football program has over 600 all-time wins, and provides one of the best Friday Night atmospheres in the state of Kansas. Memorial Stadium, built in 1967, is home to the Red Demons, and is the host venue for the annual Wild West Bowl, WAC Track & Field Championships, Red Demon Soccer, and the 2019 Shrine Bowl.
