The Dodge City Red Demons boys basketball team completed a demanding stretch of games surrounding the 83rd Annual Tournament of Champions, gaining valuable experience against elite competition and closing the run with an impressive home victory over Newton.
Dodge City opened Tournament of Champions play on January 22 at United Wireless Arena against a physical and efficient Maize Eagles squad. Maize jumped out early and controlled the tempo throughout, handing the Red Demons a 58–31 loss. Dodge City struggled to find offensive rhythm against Maize’s interior presence and defensive pressure, but continued to compete through four quarters. Ty Scheck led the Red Demons with 14 points, gaining experience against one of the tournament’s deeper teams.
Less than 24 hours later, Dodge City responded with a much stronger performance against Manhattan in a tightly contested semifinal matchup. The Red Demons fell just short, 54–52, in a game that featured 11 lead changes and eight ties. Ty Scheck again paced Dodge City with 19 points, while Cru Lembright added 13 points, including three three-pointers. Yaasir Mohammed provided an efficient spark, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. Dodge City’s improved shooting and defensive effort highlighted the team’s growth against another strong Class 6A opponent.

The Red Demons carried that momentum into their next game on January 27, hosting Newton and delivering a convincing 68–54 victory. Dodge City controlled the game from the opening quarter, building a double-digit lead early and never relinquishing it. Cru Lembright led all scorers with 18 points, knocking down five three-pointers, while Jaycion Norris added a strong all-around performance with 17 points and eight rebounds. Ty Scheck orchestrated the offense with 13 assists to go along with 12 points, as the Red Demons shot nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc and outscored Newton 33–6 from three-point range.
Overall, the Tournament of Champions stretch served as a critical measuring stick for Dodge City. Facing top-level competition on a big stage and responding with a decisive win over Newton, the Red Demons showed resilience, improved execution, and continued development as they move forward into the heart of the season.
