The Dodge City Red Demons boys soccer team clinched Western Athletic Conference title Tuesday night for the fourth straight year, beating the Hays Indians7-1Tuesday night.
Sophomore Matthew Goodale had the lone goal for the Indians. Red Demon freshman Alan Lopez, junior Josue Castillo and seniors Omar Estrada and Joshua Donjuan all had a goal each for the Red Demons.
Thenight, however, belonged to Red Demons senior Mario Martinez, who had three goals in the win.
Martinez scored twice in the game’s first 15 minutes, to put the Red Demons up 2-0. Donjuan and Lopez each got their goals before halftime, which sent the Red Demons into the break up 4-0.
Martinez said he has known Lopez for a while, partly because his younger-brother Erik has played on a team with Lopez, and to see the success Lopez is having as a freshman has made him happy, he said.
Red Demons head coach Saul Hernandez said the team played well in the first half, but got a little too relaxed in the second.
“At the beginning of the second half after
we scored the goal, we kind of eased off a little bit and that’s why they scored,” Hernandez said. “We played a little sloppy but there toward the end we picked it back up. But we gotta fix those little moments that we’re having of pry our mind lapsing a little bit.”
