Red Demon boys, girls take 2nd at Ulysses

The Dodge City High School track and field squads earned a pair of second place team finishes in their first meet of the season Friday at the Max Hiebert Invitational in Ulysses.
Both the Red Demons boys and girls finished behind Garden City in the final team results. The Dodge City girls earned 142 points while the Red Demon boys tallied 118 points.
Senior Brekk Flax picked up where she left off last season at the 6A state track meet. The standout sprinter took first place in the girls 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Freshman Ezinne Okoro beat Megan Powers from Garden City to win the girls 400 meters while senior Jessica Harshberger earned a first place finish in the 800 meters.
Senior Brianna Bradshaw was the final member of the Red Demon girls squad that took home a first place individual medal. Bradshaw won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.16 and came in second in the 300 meter hurdles.
The 4×800 relay team of Harshberger, Mariela Abdaba, Jasmine Duarte and Sydney Foster outran the competition on their way to a first place finish.
The Red Demon boys had three individual first place finishers. Senior Felix Marquez topped the competition in the boys 800 meters while Alejandro Ultreras nearly edged out teammate Marcelo Cruz for first place in the 1600 meters. Cruz took second place in the 1600 and 3200 meters.
Marquez, Cruz, Ignacio Calderon and Jason Luft captured the team’s only top finish in a relay event in the 4×800.
Senior Tyler Trent cleared 22-feet on his way to a first place finish in the long jump. Trent also took second place in the 200 meter dash.
The Red Demons will travel to Wichita on Thursday for their second meet of the season.
