After wading through the bad weather, the Red Demons finished third overall on the boys and girls side.
After getting through all of the field events and a couple races, the Regional Track and Field Championship was put on hold for three hours thanks to a deluge of rain, wind, hail and the looming threat of tornadoes.
But, once the sirens were silenced and the clouds were emptied Dodge City High School and the seven other participants got back onto the track at Dodge City Memorial Stadium and finished a day that saw the Hutchinson boy’s and the Garden City girl’s win regional championships.
Sam Unruh was the first Red Demon to be crowned regional champion as he won the 110-meter hurdles. Unruh also qualified for state in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing 2nd.
The 4×100 relay team of Chia Okoro, Chidera Okoro, Ezinne Okoro and Ayanna Page won a regional championship. Chidera Okoro also qualified for state finishing 2nd in the 100-meter dash and Chia Okoro finished qualified in the 400-meter run finishing 4th.
The Okoro sisters and Audrey Phelps finished 2nd in the 4×400-meter relays.
Also qualifying for state for Dodge City was the girls 4×800-meter relay team consisting of Phelps, Ezinne Okoro, Sydney Foster and Ayana Hensley who finished 2nd, the boy’s 4×800-meter relay team consisting of Jason Luft, Brandon Montoya, Beau Foster and Jose Rodriguez who finished 2nd, Kylee Smith and Makayla Burton who finished 2nd and 3rd in the girl’s discus, Erick Villa-Valverde who finished 3rd in the boys discus, Savanna Wilson who finished 2nd in the girls 110-meter hurdles, America Garcia who finished 3rd in the girls 1600-meter run, Luft and Alejandro Ultreras who finished 2nd and 4th in the 1600-meter run, the boys 4×100-meter relay consisting of Unruh, Dawson Williams, De Jon Delgado and Juan Gomez finished 3rd, Hensley placing 3rd in the girls 800-meter run, Luft placing 3rd in the boys 800-meter run, Gomez finishing 4th in the 200-meter dash, Coral Neave placed 4th in the girl’s 3200-meter run and Ultreras and Javier Marquez finished 2nd and 4th respectively in the boy’s 3200-meter run.
